Troubleshooting

How to fix CenturyLink not working

CenturyLink is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach centurylink.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Power-cycle the CenturyLink modem

Unplug the modem's power cord and leave it out for 30 seconds before plugging it back in; if a separate router sits behind it, power that down too and restart it after the modem's lights settle. Leave the service cable connected and test one device after two minutes.

  2. Test Ethernet on the CenturyLink modem

Plug a laptop into a LAN port on the modem with an Ethernet cable, then turn off the laptop's Wi-Fi so the test uses only the wired link. If that connection works, look at the Wi-Fi signal or the device itself before blaming the line.

  3. Renew the PC IP on CenturyLink

On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run `ipconfig /release`, then `ipconfig /renew`; if DNS still fails, run `ipconfig /flushdns` and `netsh winsock reset`, then reboot. This clears a stale lease or a broken local network stack.

  4. Check PPPoE in the CenturyLink modem

Open the modem's admin page using the address on the modem label and find the WAN or Internet setup page. Confirm the connection type matches the account: PPPoE where a username and password are required, or DHCP/IPoE where the line gets an address on its own. Save the settings and reboot the modem after the WAN status shows connected.

While CenturyLink is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Use your phone's hotspot when the home connection drops and you need email or a call.
  • Public Wi-Fi A library or cafe network helps if you can wait for the trip.
  • Mobile data Switch your phone to mobile data for quick tasks.
  • Another broadband provider Ask a nearby provider about a temporary line when repeated outages leave you without a workable connection for days.
Same time

Problems at the same time as CenturyLink

Since 27 October, all 3 of CenturyLink's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when CenturyLink goes down

CenturyLink is a home internet and phone provider. Households and small offices rely on it for work and streaming, so when the connection drops, browsing and video calls stop first, and streaming plus any phone service on the same line can go quiet.

The first sign is often a stalled page load or a router that cannot keep a connection, and video calls freeze while streaming drops to a spinner. Faults can be regional. A local problem often looks like slow speeds and repeated disconnects; one device can lose access while another stays online. The status at the top of the page comes from user problem reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours, so it can show a broad pattern while leaving your own line untested.

Questions

CenturyLink FAQ

Is CenturyLink down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping or monitor the service; that reading is a report count, so treat it as a signal about reports only. Restart your router and try a second device; if other sites load there, the trouble is local to your connection.

Why does my CenturyLink modem show a red internet light?

A red internet light usually means the router has no link to the service, so check the cable at the wall and the router first. If the light stays red after a restart, the trouble sits between your router and the network; report it rather than swapping devices.

Can I pay my CenturyLink bill while my internet is down?

You can use mobile data or another connection to sign in and pay through the account site or app. If the payment page times out, wait and try a different browser; your account balance remains available after you sign in again.

Why does the My CenturyLink app keep signing me out?

App sign-outs often come from a session timeout or a password manager clearing the login, so update the app and sign in again over a stable connection. If the account site works in a browser but the app still fails, remove and reinstall the app before you call support.

Why does my CenturyLink DSL light stay off?

A DSL light that stays off means the modem has no sync with the line, so check the phone cable and the jack before you restart the modem. If the light stays off at a second jack, the fault is outside your home and needs a repair ticket.

How we track CenturyLink

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for CenturyLink, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for CenturyLink, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. CenturyLink doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
