How to fix Proton VPN not working

Proton VPN is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Check Proton VPN's status page
Open the official status page at https://status.proton.me, then look at the report level at the top of the page you are on. If either shows a problem, wait for a fix instead of changing settings. If both look normal, check the help centre at https://protonvpn.com/support/ for the error you see.
Try another server and protocol
Open the server list and pick a different country or a different server in the same country. If it hangs on the connecting screen, open Settings > Connection > Protocol on desktop and switch from Smart to WireGuard or OpenVPN (TCP), then reconnect.
Turn off Kill Switch and check firewall
A stuck Kill Switch can block all traffic after a drop, so open Settings > Connection > Kill Switch on desktop and turn it off. Disable any other VPN or firewall app, then reconnect; a conflicting network filter can leave the app unable to connect.
Reinstall the app and reset network
Uninstall the app, then install it again from the official source for your platform. On Windows, run the installer as administrator, then open Command Prompt as administrator and run `ipconfig /flushdns` and `netsh winsock reset`. If the app still fails, try a phone hotspot to rule out your router or ISP.

While Proton VPN is down: what to use instead

Switch protocol or server If the app sits on connecting, change the protocol in settings to OpenVPN, WireGuard or Stealth and try a different country, because one overloaded or blocked server group can fail while the rest of the network works.
Manual WireGuard or OpenVPN config When the app won't open or log in, you can download config files from your Proton account on the website and load them into the official WireGuard or OpenVPN client.
Tor Browser It is slower, but it hides your IP for plain web browsing while you wait.

What happens when Proton VPN goes down

Proton VPN is an encrypted VPN service that remote workers and travelers run on phones and desktops to hide their IP address and protect traffic on public networks. When it fails, your connection can drop, and if the kill switch is on, it may block your internet because the tunnel broke.

Connection attempts fail first, so the app stalls while connecting and then shows an error. The server list may load slowly or come up empty, and if you are already connected, the tunnel can break and leave your traffic exposed until the kill switch kicks in and blocks your internet. Problems are often partial: a single server or a specific region can fail while other locations still work. A spike in reports here points to a shared problem, but it does not mean every server is down.

Is Proton VPN down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping, probe, or monitor the service from multiple locations. The official status page at https://status.proton.me is listed above, so check it for an outage notice. When that page and the report level look normal, the problem is likely on your side: load a site without the VPN, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, try another server, and sign in on a second device; if only one app or one server fails, the issue is local or limited to that server.

Why does Proton VPN keep disconnecting on my phone?

Mobile systems often drop the tunnel when you move between Wi-Fi and cellular, or when the phone sleeps. Turn on the app's kill switch or always-on VPN setting. That stops leaks and forces a clean reconnect. If it drops on one network only, test another Wi-Fi network and check whether battery saver is restricting the app.

Why can't I sign in to Proton VPN with my account?

Check the username and password on the account page. The same credentials work across Proton services. If you use two-factor authentication, enter the current code and make sure your phone's clock is set automatically. A wrong password or a locked account affects every app, so reset it from the account page if needed.

What does the Connection failed error in Proton VPN mean?

That message usually means the app could not finish the handshake with the server you picked. Your account is probably fine. Try a different server in the same country, switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN, turn off Secure Core, and restart the app. If it still fails on every server, check your firewall or antivirus, because those often block the VPN protocol.

Why does Proton VPN ask me to upgrade when I already paid?

The app may be signed in to a different account than the one tied to your payment. That gap is common when you buy through an app store. Check the account name in the app, then restore purchases or sign out and back in with the paid account.
