Troubleshooting

How to fix Kinetic not working

Kinetic is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach windstream.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Rejoin Kinetic Wi-Fi

On iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the network > Forget This Network, then join it again; on Windows 11, use Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks > Forget. This clears a bad saved profile before you touch the router.

  2. Restart the failing device

Power off the phone or computer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. A stuck network stack can leave one device showing 'Connected, no internet' while other devices on the same Kinetic line work.

  3. Power-cycle the Kinetic gateway

Unplug the gateway from power, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for its online light to go solid. Retest the same device after the lights settle.

  4. Test a wired connection

Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the gateway with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi on the laptop. If the wired connection works, the problem is the Wi-Fi signal or the device's wireless settings; if it fails too, the trouble is at the gateway or the Kinetic line.

While Kinetic is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Tether your phone for urgent email.
  • Cellular data Switch your phone off Wi-Fi so messages and maps keep working over mobile data.
  • Public Wi-Fi Use a library or cafe network for longer tasks if your mobile data is limited and you need to send files.
  • Phone support Call the provider from a mobile to report the outage.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Kinetic

Since 27 October, all 2 of Kinetic's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Kinetic goes down

Kinetic is Windstream's home internet and TV service, and households rely on it for work and streaming. An outage interrupts the connection itself, so devices may stay on Wi-Fi while pages and TV apps fail.

During an outage, the Wi-Fi signal may stay up while every page hangs and apps report no connection; browsers show 'This site can't be reached' and laptops show 'No internet, secured'. Streaming stops first, then video calls drop, smart home devices lose their cloud link, and gaming sessions time out. Wired devices fail the same way as wireless ones when the line is down, though a local router or one room's extender can cause a partial failure that looks like an outage. Problems are often regional, so a neighbor may be offline while another part of town keeps working.

Questions

Kinetic FAQ

Is Kinetic down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Kinetic are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping or probe the service itself, and it never checks from multiple locations. To tell whether the problem is only on your side, restart your router and modem, try another device on the same Wi-Fi, compare with a mobile data connection, and check whether a wired connection works; if only your home devices fail, the issue is likely local.

Why does my Kinetic internet work on Ethernet but not over Wi-Fi?

A working wired connection points to the router's Wi-Fi side rather than the incoming line. Move closer and check whether the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks show up; restart the router once, then see if both bands return.

Why does my Kinetic router show a red light?

A red light can mean the router has lost its connection to the network. Start with the cable between the router and modem and power-cycle both boxes; if the light stays red, the line or the router itself may need a technician.

Why do my devices say 'Connected, no internet' on Kinetic Wi-Fi?

That message means your phone or laptop reached the router but not the internet. Test a second device and check the router's status light; if every device fails, restart the router and modem before you call support.

Can I pay my Kinetic bill while the internet is down?

Yes, if you can reach the account portal over mobile data or another connection, because bill pay runs through the account system rather than your home line. Keep the payment confirmation and avoid retrying the same payment several times, since duplicate submissions can leave a pending charge.

How we track Kinetic

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Kinetic, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Kinetic, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Kinetic doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
