How to fix Visa not working

Visa is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach visa.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Retype the Visa card details

    Close the payment sheet, reopen it, and enter the number, expiry, and security code yourself instead of using the browser's autofill. An old saved billing address can trigger a decline even when the card has enough room.

  2. Check card controls in your bank app

    Open your issuer's app, find the Cards or Card controls section, and look for a freeze, an online payment block, or an expired date. Flip the lock off if it is on, then run the payment again.

  3. Finish the Visa Secure check

    If checkout redirects you to your bank's authentication page, enter the one-time code and let the page return to the shop on its own. Closing that tab early can leave the order pending, so the payment never settles.

  4. Remove and re-add the card in your wallet

    On iPhone, open Wallet, tap the card, tap the More button, tap Card Details, then Remove Card. On Android, open Google Wallet, tap the card, tap More, then Remove; add it back afterward and set it as the default for contactless taps.

What happens when Visa goes down

Visa is a card network that carries authorization traffic between card issuers and merchants, and it covers credit and debit cards. Shoppers, small merchants, banks, and card issuers rely on it, so an outage interrupts card payments at checkout, ATM withdrawals, contactless taps, and mobile wallet payments, while the report level at the top of the page reflects user problem reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours and not a direct test of the service.

Card payments often fail first at online checkouts, where you get a generic failure or the order will not complete; terminals in shops may then show a declined message even when your card has funds. ATM withdrawals can stop at the authorization step, and contactless taps or mobile wallet payments may be refused while chip and PIN still works in some places. Problems are often partial: one issuer or one region can fail while other Visa transactions go through. The report count at the top of the page rises when user reports are above their usual level, and the site does not probe the network or check from multiple locations.

Is Visa down right now?

If a payment fails only on your phone, try the same card on a different device or network and test a second card at the same checkout. A problem that follows your card across devices and networks points to the issuer or the network, while one that stays on a single device or Wi-Fi connection is likely local.

Why does my Visa card get declined online but work in a shop?
Online merchants run extra fraud checks. A shop terminal does not, so a mismatch between your billing address and the one on file can stop the payment. The card may also fail if the site does not accept that card type or if Visa Secure prompts a verification step you cannot complete; call the number on the back of your card to ask what the bank sees, because the issuer controls the decline reason and the shop cannot see the full picture.

Why does contactless payment fail with my Visa card?
Contactless can fail when the card sits too far from the reader or when the terminal asks for a PIN after several taps. Try the chip instead. If the chip works and the tap never does, your bank can replace the card and check whether contactless is switched on for that account.

Why does Visa Secure verification keep failing?
Visa Secure sends a one-time code or asks your bank to confirm the payment; the step fails if the phone number or email on your account is out of date. Try another browser. A browser that blocks pop-ups or cookies can stop the verification window from loading, so turn off content blockers for that site. If the code never arrives, contact your bank to check which contact details it has on file for you.

Why does my Visa card get declined at an ATM abroad?
Many banks block foreign ATM withdrawals by default until you set a travel notice, so the machine may reject the card even when your balance is fine. Try another machine. Your bank can tell you whether the block is a travel rule, a daily limit, a damaged stripe, or a network issue.
