How to fix SwissID not working

SwissID is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach swissid.ch over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check SwissID status page
Check the report level at the top of this page and the official status page. If either one shows a known problem, wait and try later; if neither does, move on to the next step.
Restart the SwissID app
Force-close the SwissID app and open it again. Start the login from the website once more; if the site shows a QR code, reload the page and scan the new one.
Check phone clock and connection
Open your phone settings and turn on automatic date and time. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically; on Android, go to Settings > System > Date & time > Set automatically. Then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try the login again.
Reinstall the SwissID app
Uninstall the SwissID app and restart your phone. Install it again from the App Store or Google Play, then set it up with your ID document if the app asks. This clears local app data that a simple restart does not.

Fix SwissID on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone

SwissID on Windows

Fix: Clear your browser cache and cookies, or try using an Incognito window to access the SwissID login portal. Ensure your Windows system clock is synchronized, as SwissID requires accurate time for authentication.
Check: Open the official SwissID portal on multiple browsers to check if the page times out or displays a server error. If other Swiss services using SwissID login also fail to redirect, it indicates a widespread outage.

SwissID on Mac

Fix: Clear your browser cache and temporarily disable Safari content blockers that might prevent the SwissID authentication redirect from loading. You can also try switching to a different browser on your Mac to access SwissID.

Check: Launch the SwissID app and check if it displays connection errors or fails to generate login codes. If the SwissID app cannot connect while other apps work fine, the service is likely experiencing an outage.

SwissID on iPhone and iPad

Fix: Force close and restart the SwissID app, or check the App Store for any pending SwissID updates. Ensure that push notifications are enabled in your iOS settings so you can receive SwissID login approval prompts.
Check: Verify if the SwissID app hangs on the launch screen or fails to deliver authentication push notifications. If your internet connection is stable but SwissID login requests fail to load, the backend servers are likely down.

What happens when SwissID goes down

SwissID is the Swiss digital identity app for logging in to government and private online services and confirming your identity, and anyone who needs to reach a government portal or sign a document can get stuck at the login or confirmation step when the service fails. That failure can block a form or a signature.

Login breaks first. You enter your credentials on a site that uses SwissID, then the page hangs or the app never finishes the approval step, so you cannot reach the account you need. Identity checks and electronic signatures fail later, usually when you scan an ID document or confirm a signature; the screen may spin or show a connection error. Problems can be partial, hitting one online service or one region while other people log in fine.

Is SwissID down right now?

Why does the SwissID app fail to scan the QR code on a desktop login?

The code expires fast, so scan it soon after it appears. A dirty camera lens or a missing camera permission can stop the scan, and closing the app before it finishes leaves you at the same error. Try again with the phone held steady and the whole code inside the frame.

What makes SwissID login time out in my browser but work in the app?

The browser flow depends on redirects and cookies, so an ad blocker or a strict privacy setting can break the handoff. Clear the site's cookies and try a standard window instead of private mode. If the same service opens fine in another browser, the fault is local to the first one.

What does the 'Login aborted' message in the SwissID app mean?

That can mean the code expired before the app confirmed it, or the app lost its network connection mid-scan. Start the login again from the service and scan the fresh code without closing the app. Check that your phone's date and time are correct. If it keeps aborting, try another network before blaming the service.

What can I do when SwissID rejects my ID document?

A document can be rejected if it is expired or if the photo page has glare. Check that your document is current and that the details match what you entered, then retry in a well-lit room. If the rejection keeps happening, the official status page listed above can tell you whether verification is disrupted for everyone.
