How to fix Apple Pay not working

Apple Pay is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach apple.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart iPhone and retry Apple Pay

    Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power off slider appears, then drag it. Wait 30 seconds. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo shows, then open Wallet and retry the card.

  2. Set Date and Time for Apple Pay

    Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. A wrong clock can break card verification, so leave it on and try the payment again. Reboot if the toggle was off.

  3. Install iOS Updates for Apple Pay

    Settings > General > Software Update lists available updates; install any that appears. Apple ships Wallet and NFC fixes inside these updates, and the phone restarts when the install finishes. Try a payment once the lock screen returns.

  4. Remove and Re-add Your Apple Pay Card

    Wallet & Apple Pay sits under Settings; tap the card, then tap Remove Card. Removing it clears the token. Add the card again with the camera or by typing the details, then complete the bank's verification; if the card still fails, call the issuer and ask if the digital wallet is active.

Apple Pay on Android

Fix
Apple Pay is exclusive to Apple devices and cannot be set up or used on Android. To make mobile payments on Android, configure Google Wallet or use a supported web payment method.

What happens when Apple Pay goes down

Apple Pay is Apple's contactless and online payment system for iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac, and it stores the cards you add in Wallet. People rely on it at card terminals, in apps, on websites, and on transit, so an outage interrupts a quick tap or a checkout that needs a card to clear.

During an outage you may see a card sit in Wallet while a terminal declines the tap, or the Apple Pay sheet ends with a failed payment message after you authenticate. Adding a new card or confirming one often fails before an existing tap does, and in-app or web checkouts can stall when the sheet cannot reach Apple's servers. Problems tend to hit one bank, card network, country, or merchant at a time, so a working tap nearby does not prove your card is fine. The status at the top of the page shows whether user reports are above their usual level in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; this site does not ping or check the service from multiple locations.

Is Apple Pay down right now?

To rule out your side, try a different card or device, and confirm the card works in the Wallet app. If a second device on a different network works, the problem is on your side.

Why does Apple Pay say 'Payment Not Completed' at the card reader?
This usually points to the terminal or the payment network rejecting the handoff. Your phone is probably fine. Check the card in Wallet, then try the reader again. If it happens at one shop only, the terminal is the likely culprit.

Why does Wallet say 'Could Not Add Card' when I try to set up Apple Pay?
The bank may need to verify the card, or the card type may not support the service. Check that the card details match your bank record, then call the number on the back of the card if the add still fails. Removing and adding the card again can clear a stuck setup, but do not keep retrying after a bank decline.

Can I use Apple Pay when the shop's card reader is offline?
No, the terminal still has to process the payment, so an offline reader will fail even if your iPhone shows the card. Some transit gates and vending machines store payments for later, but most shops cannot complete the sale until the connection returns. Use a physical card or cash if the reader is down.

Why does Apple Pay work in stores but fail on websites in Safari?
Web payments need a merchant that accepts the service and a card that is allowed for online use. A compatible Mac or iPhone matters too. If the button appears but the sheet closes, check Safari's AutoFill and payment settings, then try a different browser. Your bank may block the card for online payments even when tap-to-pay works.
