Troubleshooting

How to fix RCN not working

RCN is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach rcn.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check the RCN report level

Open the status page and look at the report level at the top. A high level means other people report the same trouble, while a normal level points to your connection or device.

  2. Reboot the modem and router

Unplug the power cord from the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then plug the modem back first and let its online light go solid before you power the router. If the online light stays off, the problem is likely on the RCN side.

  3. Test a wired connection

Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi on the laptop. If a page loads, the RCN signal is fine and the fault is in your Wi-Fi or device; if nothing loads, keep the cable connected and move to the next step.

  4. Renew the network lease

On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew; on macOS, open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > TCP/IP and click Renew DHCP Lease. A 169.254 address means the router is not giving your device a lease.

While RCN is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Use your phone's cellular data to connect a laptop or tablet when the home connection drops and you need to finish work.
  • Public Wi-Fi A library or cafe network covers email and basic browsing if the outage lasts long enough to leave home.
  • Cellular data Switch your phone to cellular data for calls and app access while the broadband line is out.
  • TV antenna An indoor antenna picks up local broadcast channels if the TV service is out and you want news or weather.
Same time

Problems at the same time as RCN

Since 27 October, RCN's only spike in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when RCN goes down

RCN is a home internet and cable TV provider used by households and small offices for remote work and TV viewing. An outage interrupts that work and TV viewing, leaving calls and streams unusable.

An outage usually shows up first as a Wi-Fi connection that stays linked but cannot reach the internet, so pages time out and video calls freeze. Cable TV may keep showing some channels while on-demand titles fail to load. Problems can stay local. The report level at the top shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the site does not ping or probe the service.

Questions

RCN FAQ

Is RCN down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping or probe the service from multiple locations. To tell if the problem is only on your side, test the same site or app on another device, switch between Wi-Fi and a wired connection, check the router lights, and compare against a mobile hotspot.

Why does my RCN Wi-Fi drop in some rooms but not others?

Wi-Fi signal drops with distance and walls, so a far room can fail while the room next to the router stays fine. Move the router to a central spot, then try the 2.4 GHz band for better reach.

Why does my RCN bill show a higher amount than my plan?

A promotional rate can end, or an equipment fee can push the total above the quoted plan price. Open the latest bill in MyRCN and compare the recurring charges with the plan details before you call support.

Why does my RCN internet fail on my laptop while my phone still works?

A phone on cellular data does not test your home connection, so join the same Wi-Fi and compare. On the laptop, forget the network and rejoin it; if that fails, check whether a VPN or proxy is blocking traffic.

Why do I see 'connected, no internet' on my RCN Wi-Fi?

That message means your device joined the router but could not reach the internet. Restart the router and modem, then test a wired connection; if the wired connection also fails, the problem is on the service side or the line.

How we track RCN

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for RCN, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for RCN, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. RCN doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
