Troubleshooting

How to fix NHS England not working

NHS England is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach england.nhs.uk over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Try the NHS England page on another network

Turn off Wi-Fi in Control Center on iPhone or Quick Settings on Android, then reload the page over mobile data. If it still fails on both connections, the problem is more likely on your device or account than on the network.

  2. Open the NHS England site in private mode

In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window; in Safari, choose File > New Private Window. Sign in again on the NHS England site and check whether the page loads. A private window skips saved cookies and extensions, so it shows whether that data is causing the failure.

  3. Clear stored data for the site

On iPhone, go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data and delete the NHS site's data. In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data and choose Cookies and other site data plus Cached images and files. Close and reopen the browser, then sign in again.

  4. Reset your NHS login password

On the NHS login screen, use the Forgot password link and follow the email or phone prompt. If the message does not arrive, check your spam folder and confirm the address on the account; then sign in with the new password or try the service on another device if the page still stalls.

While NHS England is down: what to use instead

  • NHS 111 online Use it for urgent medical advice when the NHS website or app will not load and you can answer questions on a phone or computer.
  • NHS 111 by phone Call 111 when the online route fails.
  • NHS App Use the app for repeat prescriptions and appointments when the website is the part that fails.
  • GP surgery phone Ring your GP surgery for appointments or prescription queries if the online service will not load.
Same time

Problems at the same time as NHS England

Since 28 October, all 2 of NHS England's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when NHS England goes down

NHS England oversees the publicly funded health service in England, and its online services include the NHS App, the NHS website, NHS login, and 111 online. Patients and GP practice staff rely on those services for appointments, prescriptions, records, and urgent advice, so an outage interrupts care that people expect to handle without a phone call.

Sign-in often fails first: the NHS App hangs on its loading screen, NHS login rejects a correct password, the NHS website shows a problem page, and the app's home screen stays blank. Appointment slots then won't load, or a repeat prescription request refuses to send, even when the app itself opens. A 111 online session can stop before it gives advice, or a local GP practice's booking link can fail while the rest of the app works. Regional faults happen too.

Questions

NHS England FAQ

Is NHS England down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for NHS England are above their usual level. To tell whether the problem is only on your side, try another site, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, open the page in a second browser, and try a different device. If it fails only on one device while other things work, the issue is local to you.

The NHS App signed me out while I was opening my GP record. What should I try?

The app can sign you out after a period of inactivity, and a weak connection can make the fresh sign-in fail. Try a stable connection and sign in on another device. If it still will not open, your GP surgery controls record access and can check your online account settings.

NHS 111 online keeps stopping on the questions page. Is my connection the problem?

A dropped connection can make the page lose its place, and a tab left open too long can do the same. Reload once on a stable connection and try a different browser. If it still stops, call 111 and explain the symptoms.

My repeat prescription button is missing from the NHS App. Can my GP surgery fix it?

Repeat prescription ordering depends on your GP surgery enabling online requests, so the button can be missing even when the app works. Sign out and back in to confirm you are using the right account. Your surgery can confirm your online access.

NHS login cannot confirm my identity. What can I do next?

The service matches the details you enter against identity records, and a small mismatch in your name, date of birth, address, or photo ID can stop the check. Try again on a stable connection and in a different browser, typing your details as they appear on your ID. If it still fails, ask NHS login support to check your identity another way.

How we track NHS England

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for NHS England, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for NHS England, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. NHS England doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
