Troubleshooting

How to fix Jamf School not working

Jamf School is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach jamf.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart Jamf Student

Close Jamf Student from the app switcher, then open it again while the iPad is on the school Wi-Fi. On an iPad with no Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe Jamf Student up; with a Home button, double-click Home and swipe it up.

  2. Check Jamf Student connectivity

Check Settings > Wi-Fi and open any school website in Safari before you try the app again. If Wi-Fi works but Jamf Student still shows a blank screen or keeps spinning, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.

  3. Clear the Jamf School session

If only your account fails in the web console, clear the saved site data for the school's Jamf School address and sign in again. In Chrome, use Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions, search the school's domain, and choose Delete; in Safari on Mac, use Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, select the school's domain, and choose Remove.

  4. Verify the MDM profile

Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and look for the school's management profile. If the profile is missing, that iPad is no longer enrolled; ask your school tech to send the enrollment link or prepare the device again in Apple School Manager.

While Jamf School is down: what to use instead

  • Apple School Manager Check managed Apple IDs, device assignment, app license counts, and locations there if the MDM console will not load.
  • Apple Classroom Teachers can use it with classes already set up to open apps or guide student iPads while server side changes wait.
  • Microsoft Intune for Education Use it only if your school already has devices enrolled there, since moving management during an outage takes planning.
  • Mosyle Manager It can handle Apple school device management if your district already uses it or needs a longer backup path.
About

What happens when Jamf School goes down

Jamf School is Jamf’s Apple device management service for education. Schools, districts, and IT teams use it to manage iPads and Macs, so an outage can interrupt app installs, profile changes, classroom restrictions, and device inventory updates.

The admin console is usually the first place you feel trouble, with sign-in failures, pages that hang, or commands that stay pending. App distribution, profile pushes, and device inventory checks can lag while existing restrictions on devices may keep working from their last saved state. Teachers may have trouble using Jamf Teacher for class controls, and students may see managed apps or settings fail to update. Reports can be partial or regional, especially when only some schools, tenants, or Apple management actions are affected.

Questions

Jamf School FAQ

Is Jamf School down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Jamf School are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The status is based only on those reports; this site does not monitor the service and does not collect reports itself. If reports look normal but the console or app still fails for you, try another network, clear the browser session, restart the app, and test a second managed device.

Why can I not sign in to the Jamf School web console?

Check that you are using your school's Jamf School URL, since the main Jamf site is not the console. If your school uses single sign-on, open a private browser window and try the same account your district gave you. A loop back to the sign-in page can point to cookies, a stale session, an account role problem, or a browser extension. Ask your school admin to confirm that your account is active and has a role assigned.

Why are apps or profiles stuck as Pending on student iPads?

In Jamf School, Pending usually means the device has not taken the MDM command yet. Make sure the iPad is online, awake, charged, and still has the management profile installed. Apps also need an assigned license from Apple School Manager or Apps and Books; profiles need the device to be in the right group. If many iPads pause at once, ask the admin to check the Apple tokens and the push certificate.

Why does Jamf Teacher not control a class or apply restrictions?

Jamf Teacher depends on class data and device assignments in the school setup. If a class is empty, the wrong students appear, or restrictions do nothing, the teacher account may not be matched to the class roster. Have the school admin check the class import and teacher role, then compare the affected iPads with the roster in the console. The app also needs the student devices to be enrolled and reachable, so a dead Wi-Fi connection can make a good setup look broken.

Why does iPad or Mac enrollment hang at Remote Management?

Remote Management appears during Automated Device Enrollment from Apple School Manager. If the setup stops there, connect to a plain Wi-Fi network and check that the device date and time are correct. A school admin may need to confirm that the serial number is assigned to the correct MDM server and that the enrollment profile still exists. For a device that was moved between servers, an erase and fresh enrollment is often cleaner than trying to fix a half-enrolled state.

How we track Jamf School

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Jamf School, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Jamf School, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Jamf School doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
