How to fix HMRC not working
When HMRC itself is having trouble, these steps won't bring it back, but they will rule out anything on your side:
Your browser tries to reach gov.uk over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
Sign out of HMRC and back in
Sign out of the service using the Sign out link, then sign in through Government Gateway again. A stale session can leave the page stuck on a loading spinner or bounce you back to the sign-in screen.
Open HMRC in a private window
Open the same HMRC service in a private or incognito window and sign in with your Government Gateway details. If it loads there, go back to your normal browser; in Chrome, open Settings, Privacy and security, Clear browsing data, choose Cookies and other site data, then retry.
Switch HMRC to mobile data
Try the service on mobile data or another Wi-Fi network. A VPN or work firewall can break the redirect back from Government Gateway, so turn off the VPN and retry the sign-in.
Update the HMRC app or browser
Update the app or browser to the latest version, then reopen the service and sign in again. If the app still crashes when you open Self Assessment, delete it and reinstall from the App Store or Google Play, then sign in with Government Gateway once more.
While HMRC is down: what to use instead
- HMRC website Open the site in a browser when the app will not load; sign in with your Government Gateway details to reach the same tax account.
- HMRC phone line Call the helpline if an online form keeps failing and you need to sort out a filing or payment problem.
- Recognised tax software Prepare your Self Assessment return in recognised software while the online pages stall, then submit it once the service responds.
- Online banking Pay a tax bill by bank transfer through your bank if the payment screen fails.
Problems at the same time as HMRC
Since 28 October, all 2 of HMRC's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.
When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

What happens when HMRC goes down
HMRC is the UK tax authority, and taxpayers, employers, accountants and Child Benefit claimants depend on its online services for returns, payments and records. An outage interrupts Self Assessment filing, PAYE and VAT work, Child Benefit checks, and the HMRC app when you need a payment or record.
Sign-in through Government Gateway tends to break first. When that happens, you cannot reach Self Assessment, PAYE for employers, VAT returns or your National Insurance record, and the page may show a plain service unavailable or technical problem message after you enter your details. The app can stall at the same login step, while payment pages and filing forms may load slowly or drop you back to the start. Problems are often partial or regional: one service can work while another fails, and a single account, browser session or area can hit the fault while someone else gets through; a wider outage can affect many people at once, yet some parts of the service may stay up.

How we track HMRC
The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for HMRC, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for HMRC, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.
When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. HMRC doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
