How to fix Borderlands 4 not working

Borderlands 4 is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

1. Quit the Borderlands 4 session

   Do a full close first, because suspend and Quick Resume can leave the game stuck at sign-in or matchmaking. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the game process in Task Manager, and choose End task; on Steam Deck, press the Steam button and choose Exit Game. On PS5, press the PS button, highlight the game, press Options, then choose Close Game; on Xbox, press the Xbox button, highlight the game, press Menu, then choose Quit.

2. Install the latest game update

   A mismatched build can block co-op or leave you on a menu that keeps trying to connect. On Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, Updates, and keep Automatic Updates on; on Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots on the game tile, choose Manage, then turn Auto Update on. On PS5, highlight the game, press Options, then Check for Update; on Xbox, open My games & apps, Manage, Updates, and install anything listed for the game.

3. Repair the PC install

   Use this if the game crashes on launch, hangs on a loading screen, or complains about missing local files. On Steam, open Library, right-click Borderlands 4, select Properties, Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files. On Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots on the game tile, choose Manage, then Verify.

4. Reinstall the local copy

   Save this for repeat crashes after updates and repair checks, since the download can be large. On PS5, highlight the game, press Options, choose Delete, then install it again from Game Library; on Xbox, open My games & apps, See all, Games, highlight the game, press Menu, choose Uninstall, then reinstall it from Full library. On Steam, right-click the game in Library, choose Manage, Uninstall, then install it again; on Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots on the game tile, choose Uninstall, then reinstall it from Library.
