Troubleshooting

How to fix Valve Software not working

Valve Software is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach valvesoftware.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reload and restart

Reload the page (Ctrl+F5, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac), or fully close the app and open it again.

  2. Try another connection

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If it works on one and not the other, the problem is your network, not Valve Software.

  3. Update the app

Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. Old versions can stop connecting after a server-side change.

Error messages

Common Valve Software error messages

What each message means and what to try. The wording can differ a little between app versions.

  • Could not connect to Steam network.

    Means
Steam cannot reach Valve's network services, so sign-in, store pages, or library checks may fail.
    Fix
Check your connection and restart Steam. If public problem reports are above the usual level, wait a bit before changing account settings or reinstalling the app.
  • Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

    Means
The Steam updater cannot contact Valve's servers to download required files.
    Fix
Close Steam, check that your firewall or VPN is not blocking it, and try again. If other online apps work and the same message returns, give the service time and retry later.
  • There have been too many login failures from your network in a short time period. Please wait and try again later.

    Means
Valve has rate limited sign-in attempts from your network after repeated failed logins.
    Fix
Stop trying passwords for a while, then sign in again with the correct account name and password. If you use a shared network or VPN, switch to your normal connection before trying again.

While Valve Software is down: what to use instead

  • Steam client Use the desktop client if you need your library, friends list, downloads, or store access and only the company site will not load.
  • Steam mobile app Use the mobile app for Steam Guard codes, chat, and store browsing when your phone connection still works.
  • Epic Games Store Use it to buy, install, or launch other PC games while Valve Software pages are unavailable.
  • GOG Use it for DRM-free PC game downloads if you only need something else to play.

How we track Valve Software

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Valve Software, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Valve Software, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Valve Software doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
