Troubleshooting

How to fix Microsoft Store not working

Microsoft Store is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach microsoft.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check the clock and time zone

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically. A wrong clock or zone can block sign-in and downloads; click Sync now if the time is still off.

  2. Sign out and back in

In the app, select your profile icon, choose Sign out, then sign back in with the same account. A stale sign-in can cause download and update failures; signing out clears it without touching your library.

  3. Clear the Store cache

Press Windows key + R, type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. The command window closes on its own and the app opens again; if it does not, close the window and launch the app from Start.

  4. Repair or reset the app

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Store in the list, select the three dots, then Advanced options. Use Repair first; if the app still fails to open or download, use Reset, which removes the app's local data and signs you out.

While Microsoft Store is down: what to use instead

  • Microsoft Store website If the app crashes or won't load, open the site in a browser to buy or download some items instead.
  • Publisher download When you need one app and its maker offers a direct installer, use that download instead of waiting on the service.
  • Steam Steam helps when the game you want is listed there.
  • Epic Games Store For a PC game sold on Epic, you can buy and play it there without the app.

About

What happens when Microsoft Store goes down

Microsoft Store is the built-in Windows shop for apps and games, and people rely on it for installs and updates. An outage interrupts downloads, purchases, sign-ins, and library access.

When the service has trouble, the Store window may open but fail to load its home page, and installs can stall at the download stage before any progress bar moves. Sign-in errors often hit first because purchases, code redemption, library pages, and account settings need an account check; downloads and updates already in the queue may keep running for a while and then fail. Problems can be regional or partial: some regions or internet providers see failures while other people install and update without trouble. The status at the top compares user problem reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours with their usual level; it does not probe the service or check from multiple locations.

Questions

Microsoft Store FAQ

Is Microsoft Store down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level; it counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping or probe the service, so the status comes from reports; it is not a live check from here. To tell if the problem is only on your side, load another website on the same device, try the app on a different network, and sign in on another Windows PC or Xbox if you can.

Why does Microsoft Store show 'Something went wrong' when I install an app?

That message is broad, so start with your connection and the download queue. If the queue is stuck, cancel the download and retry it; confirm the app supports your Windows version and device type before you try again. A restart of the PC clears some install failures.

Why did my Microsoft Store purchase fail or stay pending?

A failed or pending purchase usually comes from a declined card or a billing address mismatch. Check the payment option attached to your account and correct any address mismatch. Let a pending order clear before you buy the item again; a second attempt may create two orders.

Why does Microsoft Store keep asking me to sign in on my Xbox?

A sign-in loop often points to a saved password that no longer works or an account attached to the wrong profile. Remove the account from the console and sign in again. If the same account works on another device, the fault sits with that console.

Why is an app missing from my Microsoft Store library or unavailable in my region?

Your library shows buys tied to the account you signed in with, so sign out and back in if an app is missing. Region matters because some apps and games are not sold in every country, so the service may hide an item listed for a different country. Check the device type too: an app made for Xbox may not install on a Windows PC.

How we track Microsoft Store

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Microsoft Store, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Microsoft Store, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Microsoft Store doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
