How to fix Threema not working
Threema is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:
Your browser tries to reach threema.ch over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
Check the Threema status page
Open the official status page and see whether the service reports trouble. If it does, wait for the fix; if it does not, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and turn off any VPN, because a filtered network can block the app's servers.
Force quit and reopen Threema
Toggle airplane mode on and off after a few seconds, then reopen the app. A stale connection to the push service is a common reason messages sit with a clock icon instead of sending.
Allow background activity and notifications
On Android, open Settings > Apps > Threema > Battery and set it to Unrestricted, then check that notifications are allowed for the app. On iOS, open Settings > Threema and turn on Background App Refresh, then allow notifications there as well.
Update, then restore from Threema Safe
Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play, then reopen the app. If it still fails, make a Threema Safe backup under Settings > Threema Safe before you reinstall the app. Then restore that backup with your ID and Safe password.
While Threema is down: what to use instead
- Phone call Call because texts stall.
- Signal You can use Signal for encrypted chats when your messages stay stuck on sending, although you must ask contacts to install it before you reconnect.
- WhatsApp Send a WhatsApp message if your group must coordinate while calls fail to connect.
- SMS Fall back to SMS for short codes and meetups because it goes through without data while chats recover.

What happens when Threema goes down
Threema is a paid, privacy-focused messaging app that works without a phone number or email address, and it is used by individuals and organizations that need encrypted chats and calls. An outage interrupts message delivery, voice calls, group conversations, and file sharing for anyone relying on it.
Messages often sit unsent first, showing a clock or spinner next to the text, and incoming notes may not arrive until the service recovers. Group chats can stop syncing for some members while others post normally. Calls fail at the connection step; file attachments and Threema Web sessions may drop or refuse to load. Problems tend to hit specific regions or particular contacts, because your device may reach one server path while another stays reachable.

Is Threema down right now?

To rule out your own side, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data and send a message to a contact; if other apps fail at the same moment, the fault sits with your connection or your carrier.
Why does a message sit with a pending clock icon and never send?
A pending clock means your phone has not reached the server yet, or the recipient's device is offline and holding the queue. Toggle airplane mode on and off, then confirm background data is allowed for the app; a VPN or a DNS filter can block the connection just as easily. If the message leaves your outbox but no delivery confirmation comes back, the delay is on the other end, not yours.
Can I set up Threema without giving a phone number?
You can create an ID without a phone number or an email address, and setup asks for neither. Contacts add you through your eight-character ID or by scanning the QR code in your profile. Linking a desktop or web client is the one exception, because that pairing runs through the phone.
How do I move my chats to a new phone?
Threema Safe keeps an encrypted backup on the operator's servers, unlocked by the password you chose when you turned it on. Install the app on the new phone, choose restore, then enter your ID and that password. Lose the password and the backup stays shut, since nobody at the company can reset it for you.
Why does the QR code fail when I link the desktop or web app?
Pairing goes through a QR code, so the phone has to be online and running a current version of the app while you scan. If a scan does nothing, check camera permission and reload the page for a fresh code, because an old one expires. Revoke devices you no longer use in the app settings before you try again.
