Troubleshooting

How to fix Siri not working

Siri is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach apple.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check Apple's Siri status

Apple's System Status page lists Siri; a service issue there explains a failure that affects more than one device. If the page shows no issue, move to your phone.

  2. Toggle the wake word

Go to Settings > Siri & Search, turn Listen for 'Hey Siri' off and back on, then repeat for Press Side Button if the button does nothing. Try a simple request on your phone after each change.

  3. Restart the iPhone, then retry Siri

From Settings > General > Shut Down, slide the power control and wait for the screen to go dark. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, then ask your original request.

  4. Update iOS and retry Siri

Open Settings > General > Software Update and install any pending update. The phone restarts during the install, so test the same request after your phone boots.

While Siri is down: what to use instead

  • Spotlight Type a question or conversion into Spotlight when a spoken request gets no response.
  • Clock Open the app to set a timer or alarm directly if the voice command fails.
  • Phone Call someone from Favorites in the Phone app when a voice call command will not go through.
  • Voice Control This accessibility feature opens apps and taps controls with spoken commands when the assistant stays silent.
About

What happens when Siri goes down

Siri is Apple's voice assistant on iPhone and other Apple devices; people use it for hands-free calls, messages, reminders, and home controls. An outage interrupts voice commands and hands-free tasks, from sending a message to setting a reminder.

Voice requests tend to fail first: the wake word may not respond, or a request hangs after the listening tone and ends with a connection message. Dictation can stop returning text, and commands that send messages or set reminders may fail while typed actions that do not use the service keep working. That split is common because problems often hit one device or network path while the rest of the service works. Regional trouble can affect some areas and leave others alone, so a failed request in one place says little about the next.

Questions

Siri FAQ

Is Siri down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Siri are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Apple's System Status page lists known outages on Apple's side. To check whether the problem is only on your side, try the same request on another device signed into your Apple Account and switch between Wi-Fi and cellular.

Why does the assistant ask for my passcode before it reads my messages?

Some requests touch personal data, so the iPhone asks for your passcode before it reads messages or shows calendar details. Open Settings > Siri & Search and turn on Allow Siri When Locked if you want those requests to work while the screen is locked; this setting can expose personal information to anyone holding the phone.

What makes Siri save a reminder to the wrong list?

Siri saves spoken reminders to the default list in Reminders, and that list can differ between iPhone and iPad if iCloud sync is off or the default changed on one device. Check the Reminders settings on each device and confirm the same account is signed in under iCloud.

Why does Siri mishear contact names when I ask it to call someone?

Contact names with uncommon spellings or similar sounds confuse speech recognition, especially when you call from a noisy room. Add a phonetic name field in the contact card and try the request again with the person's first and last name.

Siri says it cannot connect over Wi-Fi. What should I check?

A captive portal or a VPN can break the connection Siri needs even when your browser still loads pages. Turn off the VPN and try a different Wi-Fi network; if the request works on cellular, the problem is local to that network.

How we track Siri

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Siri, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Siri, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from Siri's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
