How to fix Google Sheets not working

Google Sheets is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach google.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Reload the sheet and watch the status bar
Press Ctrl+R to reload. If you see Trying to connect at the top, you lost internet or a VPN cut Drive access, so toggle wireless off and on before you reload again.
Toggle offline access off and on
Open the sheet and click File then Make available offline to turn it off. Wait ten seconds first. Turn the toggle back on and reload the tab, because Sheets holds a stale offline copy when Drive sync stalls and you need a fresh pull.
Clear Sheets cache and pause extensions
In Chrome go to Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data. Tick Cached images and files. Reload the sheet after you clear, and if formulas still hang on Loading, turn off ad blockers under Extensions > Manage Extensions because they block Sheets scripts.
Test in Incognito or the Sheets app
You need a clean test. Open a Chrome Incognito window with Ctrl+Shift+N, sign in to Drive, and open the same spreadsheet to learn if an extension or a bad login breaks the app.

While Google Sheets is down: what to use instead

Offline mode in Chrome If you made files available offline in Google Drive before the outage, Chrome can still open and edit them, and your changes sync once the service comes back.
Microsoft Excel Handles heavy formulas well, as long as you kept an exported .xlsx copy.

Fix: Update the Google Sheets app from the Google Play Store and clear the app's cache in your Android settings. If it still fails, try reinstalling the app and checking your Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Fix: Update the Google Sheets app via the App Store and verify that cellular data is enabled for the app in your iOS settings. Restarting your iPhone or iPad can also help resolve loading issues.

The first sign is a spreadsheet that won't open or a grid that loads without cell data. Is Google Sheets down right now?

To see whether the problem is only on your side, open another spreadsheet in a different browser or on your phone, and sign out of any extra Google accounts you have open. If those steps fail too, the problem likely affects more than your device.

Why does Google Sheets say 'You need permission' when I open a shared file?

That message means the file owner has not given your Google account access, or the share link was changed after it was sent. Ask the owner to share it again with the same email you use to sign in, and check that you opened the link in the right account. If you have multiple Google accounts, switch between them before you assume the service is down.

My formulas stopped calculating and cells show a loading spinner. What can I do?

Large spreadsheets with many volatile formulas can slow down or stop recalculating, especially when several people edit at once. Try closing other tabs and reopening the file. If a single cell still spins, copy the data to a new sheet to clear a broken formula or a range that no longer works.

Can I edit Google Sheets offline on Android or iPhone?

You can edit offline in the Google Sheets app if you have made the file available offline first. Open the file while you have a connection, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Make available offline. Changes sync when your device gets a stable connection, but formulas that rely on Google Finance or IMPORTRANGE may not update until you are online.

Why do my charts or pivot tables disappear when I refresh a shared sheet?

A refresh can drop charts and pivot tables if the source range moved, if a filter hides the rows they depend on, if a collaborator changed the sheet, or if permissions changed while you were editing. Check the source range first, then rebuild the pivot from the Insert menu if the old one still shows an error. If the file is large, give it a moment before you reload, since Sheets sometimes takes time to redraw heavy charts.
