How to fix Proton Mail not working

Proton Mail is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach proton.me over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check Proton's status page
Open the official status page to see whether Proton reports an outage. That rules out a service-wide fault. If the page shows normal service, reload the web app in a private window and sign in again.
Clear the Proton Mail session
A stale session can leave the inbox stuck on loading or send you back to the login screen. Sign out first. Open your browser's cookies and site data settings, remove entries for the Proton site, then sign in again.
Turn off the VPN and switch networks
A VPN or DNS filter can stop the web app from reaching Proton's servers while other sites still load. Turn off the VPN and switch to mobile data. If mail loads, the original network is the problem; check its router or DNS settings.
Update or reinstall the app
Install the current build from the App Store or Google Play, then sign out and back in. If the app still crashes or will not sync, delete it and install it again; your mail stays on Proton's servers. When the problem persists, use the help centre to contact support.

Fix: Clear your web browser's cache and cookies, or restart the Protonmail Bridge app if you use an external email client. You can also try accessing Protonmail through its official Windows desktop application.

Is Proton Mail down right now?

Open the web inbox and compare it with the mobile app, because a fault that follows one device or network sits on your side.

Why does Proton Mail keep asking me to re-enter my password on iOS?

The app drops your session after some updates, and a VPN or iCloud Private Relay can break the login handshake. Sign in again, then check that background refresh is on for the app; if the prompt returns, delete the app and add your account once more.

Why can't I decrypt a message in the Proton Mail app?

A message that will not decrypt usually points to a key mismatch, often after a password reset or a change to recovery settings. Open the web app and read the same message there, because the browser may hold a different key cache; if it fails there too, use the account recovery options in settings.

Why is Proton Bridge stuck on Connecting?

Bridge needs a stable local connection, so a firewall or VPN can block it before any mail syncs. Quit Bridge, restart it, and check the ports your mail client uses against the ones Bridge shows; if the client keeps retrying, remove the account there and add it again.

Why did email to my custom domain stop arriving in Proton Mail?

Mail to a custom domain depends on MX records that point at the service, and a DNS change at your registrar can break delivery without touching your inbox. Check the domain settings page for a warning, then compare those MX records with the ones at your registrar; if they differ, fix the registrar side and wait for DNS to propagate.
