How to fix Google Pay not working

Google Pay is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach pay.google.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check your connection and VPN
Your connection is the first thing to rule out. Open another app or a web page to confirm the phone has a working connection; if a VPN is active, turn it off from Settings, then Network & internet, then VPN. Google Pay payments can fail when a blocked route or a bad session stops the payment sheet from loading.
Force stop the Google Pay app
Force stop the app from Settings, then Apps, then Google Pay, then Force stop. Wait a few seconds, then open it again. This clears a stuck payment sheet or a hung sign-in without touching your cards.
Update Google Pay and Play services
Your updates live in the Play Store. Tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device, then Updates available. Update Google Pay and Google Play services together because a mismatch between them can break online checkout or card verification.
Clear Google Pay app data
Clearing the app's data is the last resort. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Google Pay, then Storage & cache, then Clear storage. This wipes the app's saved setup, so you will sign in and add your cards again; do it only after the simpler steps fail.

While Google Pay is down: what to use instead

Your physical card Pay with the same debit or credit card you added to the app, because the shop terminal reads the chip or contactless signal on its own and a problem with the app doesn't affect it.
Samsung Wallet If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, add your card to Samsung Wallet and tap with that instead.
PayPal For online orders, most large shops list it at checkout.
Card details at checkout On websites, skip the Google Pay button and type your card details into the checkout form by hand.

Fix: Clear the Google Pay app cache in your Android settings and ensure the app is updated to the latest version via the Google Play Store. Verify that your device's NFC is turned on for contactless payments.
Check: Open the Google Pay app to check if your cards load or if you receive a connection error. If the app fails to authenticate while other apps work, Google Pay is likely down.

What happens when Google Pay goes down

Google Pay is a digital wallet for Android and the web that shoppers use to store cards and payment methods, then tap to pay in stores, check out online, send money to friends, and buy in apps. An outage interrupts store payments, online checkouts, transfers, and saved card access.

The first signs usually show up at checkout: a card declines even though it is valid, or the payment sheet spins until it times out. Tap-to-pay in a store often fails before online payments do. Sending money to another person can hang after you confirm, and your balance or recent activity may show old data. Is Google Pay down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Google Pay are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping, probe, poll, or monitor the service itself, and it never checks from multiple locations. If an official status page is listed above, open https://pay.google.com/status. To tell whether the problem is only on your side, try the app on another phone or tablet, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make a small payment or check your balance from a different Google account.

Why does Google Pay show 'Payment not completed' when I tap to pay in a store?

That message usually means the terminal and your phone did not finish the handshake, so the terminal never charges your card. Hold the phone against the reader for another second and keep it unlocked. Check that NFC is on. If it fails at one store but works at another, the terminal or its connection is the likely problem. Try a different card in the app if the same message appears at every reader.

Why can't I add my bank card to Google Pay?

Banks sometimes block a card from being added until you approve it in their own app or by replying to a verification text. Check the card is active and contactless payments are allowed. The billing address must match the bank's records. If the app still refuses it, call the number on the back of the card and ask if they permit it in Google Pay. A virtual card from the same bank may work in the meantime.

Why does Google Pay stop working on my Wear OS watch?

The watch version needs a phone nearby for setup and sometimes for card verification, so a lost Bluetooth link can break tap to pay. Open the payment app on the watch and check the same Google Account is signed in. Confirm the card is the default. If the watch shows a crossed-out card, remove it and add it again from the phone. A factory reset can fix the token, but you must re-add every card.

Why does Google Pay say 'Google Pay isn't available in your country'?

Region rules are strict. The app and its features vary by region, and some cards or bank accounts only work where they were issued. Check the help centre at https://support.google.com/pay for supported countries and card types. Your billing address and the country on your Google Account can cause the block if you moved or travel often, and changing the account country is not a quick toggle; use the official support steps if you need to move it.
