Troubleshooting

How to fix Venmo not working

Venmo is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach venmo.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force quit and reopen the app

Swipe up from the bottom on iPhone or open the app switcher on Android, then swipe the app away and reopen it. A stale session can leave the app stuck on a loading screen or showing a blank balance.

  2. Turn off VPN and switch networks

Turn off any VPN or iCloud Private Relay, then switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data and try the action again; the app can fail a payment or show a network error when it cannot reach its servers. If split tunneling is on, bypass the app.

  3. Sign out and sign back in

Open the app's Settings, tap Sign Out, then sign back in with your phone number or email and password. That clears a bad session token. It often fixes a payment that keeps failing or a feed that stops updating.

  4. Reinstall and contact help centre

Delete the app, restart your phone, then reinstall it from the App Store or Google Play. This removes local data and can clear a broken login loop. If the trouble stays on one device, use the help centre form at https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and include the exact error message and the steps you tried.

  • Zelle Zelle works through your bank's app for a transfer to a contact already linked to your account.
  • Venmo on the web Sign in from a browser to send or request money if the mobile app keeps crashing on your phone and you cannot wait for it to recover.

About

What happens when Venmo goes down

Venmo is a mobile payment app for sending money, splitting bills, paying friends back, and checking out with accepted merchants. An outage interrupts quick transfers between friends and the cash-out or card payments people rely on, so a failed payment can leave you short at checkout or waiting on money you need.

The first sign is usually a payment or request that will not go through, even when the app opens and your balance loads. Cash out to a linked bank can stall, card payments may decline, the feed can show old activity, and notifications can arrive late while new transfers fail. Problems are often partial or regional: sending money to a friend can fail while merchant checkout still works, or one group of reports can rise while the total stays near normal. The status at the top only shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; this site does not ping, probe, poll, or monitor the service, and it never checks from multiple locations.

Questions

Venmo FAQ

Is Venmo down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level; it counts them in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. To see if the problem is only on your side, switch from Wi-Fi to cellular and try the app on another device. If it fails on both connections while other apps work, the issue is likely with the service or your account; if everything fails, start with your network.

Why does Venmo keep saying my payment failed?

A failed payment can come from a declined linked card or bank, or a sending limit on the account. Check the payment method in the app, then try a different funding source or a smaller amount. If the same message appears on every method, use the help centre at https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and include the exact wording.

Why can't I add or confirm my bank on Venmo?

Bank linking can fail when the sign-in details are wrong, the account name does not match your profile, the bank is already linked to another account, or the bank site is down. Sign in to the bank in a browser first, then return to the app and try the link again. If it still fails, use the help centre at https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and send a screenshot of the message.

Why can't I scan a Venmo QR code or find someone by username?

The app can lose camera permission, the code can sit too close or too far from the lens, the username may not match the account exactly, or the person may have changed privacy settings. Check camera permission for the app, then search by phone number or email instead of the username. If the code scans but the payment screen stalls, switch networks and try again.

Why does Venmo say my account is frozen or locked?

A frozen or locked account usually means the service needs to check your identity or a recent payment. You may see a prompt to verify your identity or upload a document, and the app can block payments until that review ends. Use the help centre at https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new if the prompt loops or you cannot sign in at all.

How we track Venmo

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Venmo, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Venmo, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Venmo doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
