What happens when Geldmaat goes down

Geldmaat runs the yellow cash machines used across the Netherlands for cash withdrawals and, at selected machines, deposits of notes or coins. Dutch bank customers and shop staff rely on it when they need physical cash, so an outage can stop a withdrawal or block a deposit when the next usable machine is not close.

For many people, withdrawal trouble shows first: the machine may mark itself unavailable, refuse to start the transaction, end before dispensing notes, or say cash is not available. Deposits can fail more narrowly, especially at machines that take banknotes or coins, while nearby withdrawal-only machines may still work. The machine finder can also be slow or show a location that is out of service by the time you arrive. Problems are often partial, because one card type, one deposit function, one machine, or one town can be affected while other Geldmaat machines keep working.

The location finder depends on the website and your browser location settings. Enter a postcode or town by hand if the map does not load. If it works on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, your network or browser settings are the likely cause.

What should I do if a Geldmaat deposit machine rejects my banknotes?

Deposit machines can reject folded, torn, taped, or dirty notes. Remove clips and envelopes, straighten the notes, and try a smaller stack. If the machine keeps the notes or the amount looks wrong, keep the receipt and contact your own bank.

Can a Geldmaat issue stop my debit card from working in shops?

ATM withdrawals and shop payments use different parts of the banking chain. If your card fails only at a cash machine, try another ATM and check your withdrawal limit. If card payments fail in shops too, check your bank app for a card block or a wider bank issue.
