Troubleshooting

How to fix HSBC not working

HSBC is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach hsbc.co.uk over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force quit the HSBC app and test another connection

Open the app switcher on iPhone by swiping up and holding, then swipe the app card upward. Turn Wi-Fi off and open the app on mobile data; if it loads, your home network is the fault.

  2. Try HSBC online banking in a private window

Open a private browser window and sign in to online banking; if the site loads, the app is the likely fault. Chrome uses Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac, while Safari uses File > New Private Window.

  3. Clear the HSBC app cache on Android

On most Android phones, open Settings > Apps > HSBC > Storage and tap Clear cache. Clearing cache is safe; clearing storage signs you out and may remove saved settings.

  4. Reinstall the HSBC app

Delete the app and install it again from the App Store or Google Play. Restart your phone before you open it, then sign in with your online banking details.

While HSBC is down: what to use instead

  • HSBC website Sign in through a browser when the app will not load or you cannot see your balances.
  • HSBC debit or credit card Use the card at a till if the app stalls.
  • HSBC ATM Take out cash with your card if you need money and the app is down.
  • HSBC phone banking Call the phone banking line to check a balance or move money when the app and the website both fail and you cannot wait for the service to come back.
About

What happens when HSBC goes down

HSBC is a global bank with personal and business accounts, cards, loans and investment services, used through its app, website and branches. An outage interrupts logins, payments, transfers and card use.

The app is usually the first thing to fail. Login hangs, biometric login drops back to the password screen, and balances may not load, while online banking can show a blank page or a generic service message after you sign in. Card payments and ATM withdrawals often keep working because they run on separate systems, though some customers see declines at the till or a stale balance. Problems are often partial and regional: one country's app or a single payment type fails while other services carry on.

Questions

HSBC FAQ

Is HSBC down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for HSBC are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not contact the service or test your app or connection. To check your side, open the app, open the website, try another network, and try a second device. If the app and the website both fail the same way, the trouble is likely not your phone alone.

Why does the HSBC app keep saying it cannot connect when my Wi-Fi works?

A working Wi-Fi connection does not prove the app can reach the service because a captive portal or VPN can break the login path. Turn off Wi-Fi and try mobile data before opening the app again; if the same message appears on both connections, check whether the service is having trouble rather than your router.

Why did my HSBC transfer go through but the balance still looks old?

Pending transfers and card payments often show up before the available balance catches up, so the two numbers can disagree for a while. Pull down to refresh the account screen, then check the transaction list instead of only the summary tile. If the payment is missing from both places after a reasonable wait, call the number on the back of your card.

Why does the HSBC app log me out every time I switch to another app?

The app locks when it loses focus, and a short timeout can make that feel like a crash. Check the app's security settings for a session timeout or biometric login option, then update the app from your phone's store. If the logout happens during a payment or while you use a secure key, note the step where it fails and call support with that detail.

Can I use the HSBC app while travelling abroad without my card being blocked?

Foreign Wi-Fi can work fine. A new location can still trigger a fraud check on a card payment, so tell the bank your travel dates before you go and keep a second way to log in in case SMS codes do not arrive. If a card is declined, check the app for a card freeze or a message asking you to confirm the payment.

How we track HSBC

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for HSBC, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for HSBC, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. HSBC doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
