How to fix Fallout Shelter not working
Fallout Shelter is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:
Check the Fallout Shelter status page
Open Bethesda's official status page and look for an incident affecting the game. If Bethesda lists no outage, the fault sits on your device or network; start with the app itself.
Force quit and reopen
A stuck loading screen or a crash at the vault door often clears when you kill the process and start again. On iOS, swipe up from the bottom edge and flick the Fallout Shelter card away; on Android, open the recent apps screen and swipe the card off. Reopen it and wait through the first load before you tap anything.
Switch networks for cloud saves
The game contacts Bethesda's servers for cloud saves and store purchases, so a flaky Wi-Fi link can leave the sign-in or purchase screen spinning. Toggle Airplane Mode on for a few seconds and then off, then try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. A captive portal on public Wi-Fi can block the connection too.
Link the vault before reinstalling
A full phone can stop the app from writing save data. Check free space under Settings > General > iPhone Storage on iOS or Settings > Storage on Android; if the app still opens, use its Settings menu and the Cloud section to check that your vault is linked to a Bethesda.net account. Delete the app and install it again from the App Store or Google Play, because a reinstall without that link can wipe the vault.
While Fallout Shelter is down: what to use instead
- Fallout Shelter on another platform If the app will not open on your device, try the version for another platform you own, such as PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch.
- Fallout Shelter on another device If the game crashes or freezes on one device, try it on another supported device where you have installed it.
- Fallout 4 If you want another single-player Fallout game while Shelter is unavailable, Fallout 4 is available on PC and consoles.
What happens when Fallout Shelter goes down
Fallout Shelter is a free-to-play vault management game where you build rooms, assign dwellers, and send teams into the wasteland on iOS, Android, PC, and consoles. Players rely on it for quests and cloud saves, so an outage blocks sign-in, save syncing, store purchases, and online services.
Sign-in and cloud sync usually fail first, so you may load a vault from one device and find progress missing on another. Quests can hang at a loading screen, while the in-game store may reject a purchase or fail to restore what you already bought. Local vaults still work. Problems are often partial: one platform or region reports trouble while others play normally, and anything tied to your account stays offline until the connection returns.

How we track Fallout Shelter
The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Fallout Shelter, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Fallout Shelter, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.
When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from Fallout Shelter's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
