Troubleshooting

How to fix Fallout 76 not working

Fallout 76 is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Check the official status page

Open the official status page for Bethesda. It shows whether player reports are above the usual level in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. If the page lists an incident, wait for Bethesda to post an update before you reinstall anything.

  2. Restart the game and platform

Close Fallout 76 completely, then exit Steam or the Microsoft Store app. On Xbox, press the Xbox button and choose Quit on the game tile; on PlayStation, close the application from the home screen. Launch it again and sign back into your Bethesda.net account.

  3. Power cycle your network

Unplug your modem and router, then plug them back in after 30 seconds. On PC, open Command Prompt as administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns, then netsh winsock reset. Reconnect and test the game.

  4. Verify game files and reinstall

On Steam, open Fallout 76's Properties from your Library and click Verify integrity of game files under Installed Files. On Microsoft Store, use Settings, Apps, Installed apps to open the game's Advanced options, then choose Repair. If the problem stays, uninstall and reinstall the game.

While Fallout 76 is down: what to use instead

  • Fallout 4 If you just want time in the wasteland, Fallout 4 runs offline on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, so a problem with Bethesda's servers won't kick you out of it.
  • Fallout Shelter It's free on phones and works without a connection.
  • Bethesda status page Check the official status page before you reinstall the game or reset your router, because Bethesda posts planned maintenance and known server trouble there.
  • The Fallout 76 subreddit Players there post fast when they can't connect or get dropped from a world, which helps you tell a wide outage from a problem with your own console or network.
About

What happens when Fallout 76 goes down

Fallout 76 is an online multiplayer game set in Appalachia, with base building, quests, events, and a shared world. Players who group up for public teams or trade rely on it, and an outage interrupts login, world access, inventory changes, and anything tied to the live server.

When the connection drops, you may see "Disconnected from server" or "Failed to connect to server" at the main menu, and the game can hang on "Waiting for server" before kicking you back to the title screen. Login and world loading break first, then vending, crafting, C.A.M.P. placement, and Atomic Shop purchases stall or fail once you get in. Problems are often regional or partial. Some players connect while others get a server not responding message, and one platform can work while another does not.

Questions

Fallout 76 FAQ

Is Fallout 76 down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether reports about it sit above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. A high count means plenty of other people are stuck too, and the official status page linked above is where confirmations get posted. To rule out your own side, load another game or a video site on the same device, then try the game on a phone hotspot or a second device on your network. If everything else works and only this fails, the trouble sits with the service; if nothing loads, your router or ISP is where to look.

Why do I keep getting 'Disconnected from server' in the middle of a session?

That message usually means the server dropped your session, though a flaky home connection can look identical. Check what your teammates see. If they get kicked at the same moment and they live nowhere near you, the server is at fault, and there is nothing to fix on your end; if only you drop, start with packet loss. Try a wired connection and restart the router, then check whether your PC or console sits on a crowded Wi-Fi band.

Can I play with friends who are on a different platform?

No. Each platform runs its own servers, so a friend on a different console cannot join your team, and your characters stay on the platform where you made them. Everyone who wants to play together has to buy the game on the same platform family. Platform outages are separate too, and the official status page linked above lists them one by one.

I bought Atoms and they never showed up. Where do I go?

Atoms bought through the platform store can lag behind the purchase, so give it a few minutes and restart the game. If your balance is still wrong, the store that took your payment handles refunds, while Bethesda's support handles the Atoms themselves. Keep your receipt and the transaction ID handy, because that is what both sides ask for first.

What do the C.A.M.P. placement errors mean?

'Cannot place item: intersects with an existing object' means something already occupies that spot, which is usually a resource node or another player's C.A.M.P. nearby. Move the C.A.M.P. module a short distance and try again; flat ground well away from water and marked locations gives you the most room. If the message mentions support, you are trying to float a piece with nothing underneath, so put a foundation or a wall under it first.

How we track Fallout 76

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Fallout 76, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Fallout 76, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from Fallout 76's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
