How to fix Facebook Messenger not working

Facebook Messenger is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach messenger.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
If your messages sit next to an empty circle or the app shows a connecting banner at the top, the problem is most likely your network. Turn Wi-Fi off and try mobile data, or the reverse, and give it a minute to reconnect. Pause any VPN too.
Force stop Messenger and reopen it
On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Messenger and tap Force stop, then open the app again. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold until the app switcher appears, then flick the Messenger card up and off the screen. That clears a stuck session.
Clear the cache or offload the app
On Android, open Settings > Apps > Messenger > Storage and tap Clear cache, which keeps your login and chats in place. Your iPhone has no cache button, so go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, pick the app and tap Offload App; reinstalling from that same screen keeps its data.
Update or reinstall the app
Look for an update in the App Store or Google Play, because an outdated version can fail to load chats or keep logging you out. If nothing changes, delete the app and install it again. Encrypted chat history may need your secure storage PIN to come back, so find it before you sign in with your Facebook account.

While Facebook Messenger is down: what to use instead

Messenger in a web browser If the app crashes on launch or sits on a loading spinner while the rest of Facebook still works, sign in to the browser version on a laptop and your chats should be there.
SMS and phone calls Texts and calls go through your mobile carrier, so they keep working when Meta's servers fail.
WhatsApp It belongs to the same company and has gone down alongside Messenger during big Meta outages, so test it with one contact before you move a whole group chat over.
Signal or Telegram Both handle group chats well, though the other person needs an account too.

What happens when Facebook Messenger goes down

Facebook Messenger is Meta's chat app for phones and the browser, and a lot of people rely on it for family group chats or for messaging the small businesses that answer customers there. An outage cuts off texts, voice calls, video calls and photo sharing in one go.

The first sign is often a message that sits unsent or comes back with a warning that it could not be delivered, while your conversation list still loads from what the app has cached on your phone. Photos and voice clips often fail before text does. Calls may ring without connecting or drop after a few seconds, and the app can sit on a Connecting banner. Problems are often partial, hitting one region or only the web version, though large Meta outages have taken it down alongside Instagram and WhatsApp.

Is Facebook Messenger down right now?

If both look calm, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the reverse. When your chats load fine on another phone or in a web browser while your app still says it is connecting, the fault sits with your device, your account or your network.

Why do my messages fail with a red exclamation mark next to them?

That mark means the app gave up on delivering the message, most often because your connection dropped mid-send. Tap the message to retry it once you have a stable signal. If every message fails while other apps load fine, force close the app and reopen it; on Android you can also clear the app cache in your phone's settings, which leaves your chats alone because they are stored on Meta's side.

Why does Messenger keep asking for a PIN to restore my chat history?

End-to-end encrypted chats are backed up with a PIN you set, and the app asks for it when you log in on a new phone or after a reinstall. Enter the same PIN you created; without it, older encrypted messages won't come back on that device. If you forgot it, you can reset the PIN in the app's settings, but history protected by the old PIN may stay locked.

Why does a contact suddenly say 'This person is unavailable on Messenger'?

You see that label when the other person has deactivated their Facebook account or blocked you. Nothing on your end causes it, so reinstalling won't help. Messages you already exchanged stay in the thread, though you can't reply until the account returns or the block is lifted.

Why am I not getting Messenger notifications on my phone?

Check that the conversation isn't muted, then open your phone's notification settings for the app, since a system update can switch them off without telling you. On Android, battery optimization often stops the app from running in the background, so set it to unrestricted. On iPhone, Focus modes hold back alerts unless you allow the app through.
