Troubleshooting

How to fix Capitec not working

Capitec is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach capitecbank.co.za over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Try Capitec USSD

Dial *120*3279# from the cellphone number linked to your banking profile. If that menu opens while the app still hangs, your account access is working and the fault is probably with the app session or data connection.

  2. Force close the Capitec app

On Android, long press the Capitec icon, tap App info > Force stop, then open the app again. On iPhone, open the app switcher, swipe the app card up, and relaunch it from the home screen.

  3. Update the banking app

On Android, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps and device > Updates available, then update the banking app if it appears. On iPhone, open App Store > profile icon, pull down to refresh the list, and tap Update next to the app.

  4. Clear data and reactivate

On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Capitec > Storage > Clear cache; if it still fails, use Clear data and open the app again. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Capitec > Delete App, reinstall it from the App Store, and be ready to activate the app again with your banking details.

While Capitec is down: what to use instead

  • Capitec app If the website is the part failing, try the mobile app for balances, payments, transfers, and card settings.
  • Bank card For shop payments, use your card at the terminal instead of scanning or making an in-app payment.
  • ATM or branch If you need cash or card help and the app will not sign in, an ATM or branch can cover basic banking.
  • Phone support If a card is lost or you suspect fraud, call the bank rather than waiting for the app to load.
About

What happens when Capitec goes down

Capitec is a South African bank used for everyday accounts, cards, loans, savings, and app banking. When it has an outage, people can be blocked from checking balances, paying someone, or approving a card purchase at the worst time.

The banking app is often where trouble shows first, because sign-in, balances, and payment approvals all need live access to the bank’s systems. Card payments can behave differently from app banking; a tap at a till may still work while transfers or prepaid purchases fail. You may see spinning screens, failed payment confirmations, or messages that the service is unavailable. Problems can be partial, with some customers or areas affected while others keep banking as normal.

Questions

Capitec FAQ

Is Capitec down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Capitec are above their usual level, based on 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Those reports come from users of a public outage-reporting service, and this site does not monitor the bank or collect reports itself. If the status looks normal, test the app on Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try a simple action such as viewing your balance or opening payments. If only your phone fails, update the app and restart the device.

Why does the Capitec app say it cannot connect or keep loading after I log in?

That message often points to a network or session problem, although a wider bank issue can look the same. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then close the app and open it again. If balances still will not load while other apps work, wait a bit rather than trying transactions in a loop.

Why is my Capitec EFT or PayShap payment stuck?

A payment can hang on the spinner or fail before the confirmation screen if the app loses its session. Do not send the same payment over and over; first check your transaction history and available balance. If money left the account but the beneficiary has not received it, keep the notification or reference and contact the bank through the app or a branch.

Why am I not getting the OTP or app approval prompt for a Capitec online card payment?

Online card checks can fail when your SIM has no signal or the banking app cannot receive its approval request. Check that the card is active for online purchases and that your phone has data, then try the purchase once more. If the merchant times out but your account shows a pending card authorisation, wait for it to clear or ask the bank to review it.

Why can’t I register the Capitec app on a new phone?

Device changes often need a fresh verification before the app will show accounts or allow payments. Install the latest app from your phone’s official app store, and keep the SIM linked to your banking profile in the phone during setup. If the app asks for a selfie check or branch visit, follow the option shown there; too many failed attempts can block setup.

How we track Capitec

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Capitec, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Capitec, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Capitec doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
