How to fix NordVPN not working

NordVPN is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Disconnect and pick another server

    Quick Connect sends you to whichever server it rates best, but that server can be overloaded or slow to assign you an address. Disconnect, then choose a different country or a specific server from the list and connect again. If every server fails the same way, look at your device or network next.

  2. Switch the VPN protocol

    Open Settings, go to Connection and change the VPN protocol from NordLynx to OpenVPN (TCP), or the other way round if you were already on OpenVPN. Some hotel, office and campus Wi-Fi networks block the UDP traffic that NordLynx depends on, so TCP often gets through where it can't. On Linux, run nordvpn set technology openvpn and then nordvpn set protocol tcp before you reconnect.

  3. Check Threat Protection and Kill Switch

    Threat Protection blocks pages and downloads it flags, which can look like a broken connection, so switch it off in the app's settings and test again. If you lose all internet whenever the app disconnects, Kill Switch is doing its job; turn it off in the same area while you troubleshoot. Quit any other VPN client or firewall tool too, because two programs fighting over the network adapter often leave you stuck on connecting.

  4. Log out and reinstall the app

    Sign out of your Nord Account in the app, uninstall it, restart the device and install the latest version. On Linux, nordvpn logout followed by nordvpn login clears a stuck session without a full reinstall. When nothing helps, check the official status page for known outages and use the help centre to reach support.

While NordVPN is down: what to use instead

  • Switch protocol or server If the app hangs on connecting with NordLynx, changing to OpenVPN in the settings or picking a server in a different country can get you through when only part of the network is failing.
  • Browser extension The Chrome, Firefox or Edge extension sends browser traffic through a proxy, so it can still help when the desktop app refuses to connect.
  • Cloudflare WARP It encrypts your traffic on public Wi-Fi, but it won't change the country websites see.
  • Proton VPN When you need an IP address in another country before the service recovers, Proton VPN is an established provider you can install for the gap and remove afterwards.

Try restarting the NordVPN app or changing your connection protocol to OpenVPN or NordLynx in the app settings. You can also use the built-in NordVPN Diagnostics tool to reset the app to its default settings.

What happens when NordVPN goes down

NordVPN is a VPN service, launched in 2012, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Travellers and remote workers lean on it to protect traffic on public Wi-Fi or to reach their usual streaming library abroad, so when it fails you either lose the encrypted tunnel or, with the kill switch on, lose your internet connection until the app reconnects.

The first sign is often the app hanging on Connecting, or a login screen that rejects credentials you know are correct. Other times it says Connected while nothing loads. Meshnet links between your own devices and Threat Protection's ad and malware blocking can fail on their own while ordinary connections still work, and the browser extension may drop out even when the desktop app is fine. Most trouble is partial and hits a single country or a single protocol such as NordLynx, so switching location or protocol often gets you back online.

Is NordVPN down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The service also has an official status page at https://status.nordvpn.com/. To rule out your own setup, disconnect the VPN and load any website; if the page still won't open, the problem sits with your connection or router. When plain browsing works but every server fails, try mobile data before you assume an outage.

Why does NordVPN say connected but no websites load?
Most of the time the protocol is the culprit, because some Wi-Fi networks and firewalls block the traffic NordLynx or OpenVPN uses. Switch protocols in the app's settings and reconnect. If pages still hang, change the DNS setting or turn off Threat Protection for a moment to see whether it is filtering the sites you open.

Why is my internet gone after I disconnect from NordVPN?
That is usually the Kill Switch doing its job: it cuts all traffic whenever the VPN drops, and on some setups it keeps blocking after you disconnect on purpose. Open the app and turn the Kill Switch off, then give the connection a few seconds to come back. If the toggle is already off, restart the device before you reinstall anything.

Why does Netflix show a proxy error when I use NordVPN?
The streaming service has flagged that server's IP address, so you get the message about an unblocker or proxy. Connect to a different server in the same country, then clear the app or browser cache before you press play again. A few tries is normal.

Why can't I log in to my Nord Account in the app?
Login runs through a browser window, so the app waits for the browser to send you back after you sign in; if you close that tab early or a pop-up blocker stops the redirect, the app sits on the login screen. Sign out of Nord Account in the browser, then start the login again from the app. An expired subscription also blocks access, and you can check its status in Nord Account on the website.
