Troubleshooting

How to fix VRChat not working

VRChat is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach vrchat.net over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart and test another world

Quit the app and reopen it; if you use Steam, close Steam from the tray first because a stale session can leave the app stuck on a loading screen. Join a different world after login, which tells you if one instance is bad or the app cannot connect at all.

  2. Check your mic in Audio settings

In Main Menu > Settings > Audio, set Microphone to the headset or interface you speak into and set Mic Activation Mode to Push to Talk. Speak while you watch the level meter; if it moves but friends still cannot hear you, the issue is on their side or in the instance.

  3. Clear the VRChat cache

Go to Main Menu > Settings > Debug and press Clear Cache, then restart the app and sign in again. This wipes downloaded world and avatar data, so the next load takes longer, but it often fixes stuck downloads and missing content.

  4. Verify the Steam install

In Steam, open your Library, right-click VRChat, choose Properties > Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files; this repairs missing or corrupt files without touching your account. If you use a standalone headset, reinstall the app from its store instead because there is no equivalent file check there.

While VRChat is down: what to use instead

  • Rec Room It runs on phones, consoles, and headsets, so you can keep talking with people when the app refuses to load on your headset.
  • ChilloutVR A smaller social VR platform with user-made worlds; it covers the same avatar chat and world hopping if you want a stand-in for an evening.
  • Discord Your group's server is probably where the meetup got planned, so sort out a new time there while the service is unreachable.
  • The VRChat website Loads your friends list and account settings in a browser when the client hangs on the loading screen or drops you mid-session.
About

What happens when VRChat goes down

VRChat is a social VR platform where you join virtual worlds and talk with people in real time. Its PC and standalone headset apps depend on account sign-in, world loading, voice chat, and avatar sync, so an outage cuts you off from friends and any event you planned to attend.

When the service has trouble, login can fail, and a world may hang on 'Loading' while voice chat drops and avatars freeze in place. Friends lists and instance joins often stall first. Problems can be partial: one region or one platform may fail while the rest of the app works, and a single world can break for everyone in it. The status at the top of each page only summarizes user problem reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the site does not ping VRChat or check it from multiple locations.

Questions

VRChat FAQ

Is VRChat down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for VRChat are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not ping or probe the service itself. Test another app on the same device and switch to a different network; if the trouble follows you, the problem is on your side, and if it stays with the service across devices, wait for the report level to settle.

Why does VRChat say Failed to join world or Instance is full?

A full instance or a world that just changed can block a join, and the app may show the same message after a brief network drop. Try a different world and reopen the app before you retry. If one world fails while others work, the host or world settings are the likely cause.

Why does VRChat disconnect on Quest or another standalone headset?

Standalone headsets drop sessions when Wi-Fi weakens or the headset runs low on memory. Restart the headset and test another online app on the same Wi-Fi; if that app also drops, the network is the fault. A single VRChat disconnect with other apps fine points to the headset's connection to the world, so rejoin after a restart.

Why does my VRChat avatar show as a fallback robot?

A fallback avatar appears when the app cannot download or load the avatar you picked, often after a cache problem or a poor connection. Clear the cache from the settings menu, then rejoin the world with a built-in avatar. If only that avatar fails, the uploader may have removed it or set it private.

Why does a VRChat+ payment fail?

A failed VRChat+ charge usually points to a card decline or a billing mismatch on the account you used to pay. Check the card details and the billing account, then retry later. If the charge keeps failing, ask the payment provider because the app cannot fix a declined card.

How we track VRChat

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for VRChat, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for VRChat, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. VRChat doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
