How to fix Google Chat not working

Google Chat is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach google.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Reload the tab and try a private window
A stuck tab is the usual culprit when Chat hangs on the loading screen or messages stop arriving. Press Ctrl+R, or Command+R on a Mac, and if nothing changes open the service in a private window. Extensions do not run there, so a clean load points to one of them interfering.
Sign out of your account and back in
A stale sign-in can break the app for one person while the rest of the team carries on. Click your profile picture in the top right, choose Sign out, then sign in again. In the desktop app, remove the account from Settings and add it back.
Clear the browser's site data
Cached files can leave Chat stuck on a blank pane or an endless spinner. Click the site controls icon beside the address bar, open Site settings, then choose Delete data. Reload the page and sign in again.
Rule out an outage, then reinstall
If the browser works but the desktop app does not, the install is the likely fault. Check the Google Workspace status dashboard first to rule out a service-wide outage, then uninstall the app and install it again. The help centre has platform-specific steps.

While Google Chat is down: what to use instead

Gmail Gmail and Chat can fail on their own, so email your teammates when messages won't send.
Web version instead of the app If the mobile app sits on a loading screen or shows messages as not sent, open the service in a desktop browser, or switch to the phone app if the browser is the one stuck.
Google Meet Paste a Meet link into an email or calendar invite when you need to talk something through faster than typing allows.
Slack or Microsoft Teams Use them for urgent threads if your company already has one set up.

Fix: Clear your browser cache and cookies, or reinstall the Google Chat app if using the standalone desktop version. Ensure your browser is updated to the latest version and disable extensions that might block the connection.
Check: Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard to see if Google Chat is experiencing a known outage. You can also try opening Google Chat in an Incognito window to see if the issue is browser-specific.

What happens when Google Chat goes down

Google Chat is a messaging app for direct messages, group chats, Spaces and Meet calls, and teams use it for quick decisions and file sharing. An outage interrupts the short side conversations that keep work moving and can cut a team off from a room where decisions are already happening.

Your messages may fail to send or show a send failure notice, while older threads and Spaces can still open with missing replies or stale previews. Sending and loading tend to break before search and notifications; a message you sent from the desktop app might never appear on your phone. Calls can drop or fail to connect, and a Meet link in a conversation may not open. Trouble is often partial and regional, so one workspace, network, device or platform can be hit while another stays usable.

Is Google Chat down right now?

Open the app on another device and switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data; if the same conversation fails in both places, the problem is not limited to your browser or phone.

Why does Google Chat say 'Message not sent' when I reply in a space?

That notice can mean the app lost its connection or the space has posting restrictions for your account. Check your network and reopen the conversation; if only that space fails, ask the space manager to review who can post.

Why don't Google Chat notifications show up on my iPhone?

iOS notification settings and Focus modes can silence the app even when messages arrive. Allow notifications for the app, confirm the conversation is not muted, check Focus, and open the app once to resync; if only one thread is quiet, its mute setting is the likely cause.

Why can't I add an outside address to a Google Chat space?

Guest access and organization policies decide who can join, so an outside address may be blocked before the invite sends. Confirm you are in the right Google account, then ask the space manager to check membership settings; a Workspace admin on the other side may have Chat disabled.

Why does Google Chat work in the app but not inside Gmail?

Gmail loads the chat panel in a frame, so cookie blocking or a strict extension can leave it blank while the standalone app still works. Try a private window and clear site data for Gmail; if your account is managed by a workplace or school, an admin policy may hide Chat in Gmail.
