Troubleshooting

How to fix Oculus not working

Oculus is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach meta.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reload and restart

Reload the page (Ctrl+F5, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac), or fully close the app and open it again.

  2. Try another connection

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If it works on one and not the other, the problem is your network, not Oculus.

  3. Update the app

Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. Old versions can stop connecting after a server-side change.

Error messages

Common Oculus error messages

What each message means and what to try. The wording can differ a little between app versions.

  • Can't Reach Oculus Service

    Means
The PC app cannot connect to the local Oculus service that runs headset and library functions on Windows.
    Fix
Restart the PC, then open the desktop app again. If it comes back, run Repair for the Oculus PC app and check that your Meta account can sign in on meta.com.
  • Tracking Lost

    Means
The headset cannot read the room well enough to track your head and controllers.
    Fix
Turn on more light, wipe the headset cameras, and move away from mirrors or blank walls. If the screen still stays on this message, restart the headset.

While Oculus is down: what to use instead

  • Installed Quest games Use games already on your headset if they do not need an online sign-in or multiplayer.
  • SteamVR Use your Steam VR library if you have a PC VR headset or a PC VR setup that is working outside Oculus.
  • PlayStation VR2 Use supported PlayStation 5 VR games if you have the headset and want to play while Meta account or store access is failing.
  • Viveport Use it for PC VR games if your headset and PC setup support it.

How we track Oculus

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Oculus, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Oculus, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Oculus doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
