How to fix MEGA not working

MEGA is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach mega.nz over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Open the web app in a private window
Load the web app in a private or incognito window, which turns most browser extensions off. If your files and folders appear there, an ad blocker or privacy extension in your normal window is probably stopping the page scripts that decrypt them; switch extensions off one at a time until the problem goes away.
Clear cached site data
In Chrome or Firefox on Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, tick cookies and cached files, and clear them. That signs you out. Sign back in with your email and password, then try the folder or download that failed before.
Check your transfer quota
When a download stops partway and a box says you have exceeded your transfer quota, the service is still working; free accounts have a limit on how much you can download in a set period, and the box shows how long until you can continue. Wait for the timer, then start the download again.
Restart or reinstall the MEGA desktop app
Click the app icon in the system tray or menu bar, open its menu and quit, then start it again. If syncs still stall or show errors, uninstall the app, install a fresh copy and sign in, because your cloud files stay where they are and you only need to set up your sync folders again. While MEGA is down: what to use instead

The web version in a browser If the desktop or phone app hangs on login or stops syncing, sign in through a browser and see whether your files load there, because that tells you if the fault sits with the app or with the service itself.
Your local synced folder Anything the desktop app already synced stays on your computer, and files you saved to Offline in the mobile app stay readable too, so you can keep working while the connection is out.

Fix: Restart the MEGAsync desktop app or clear your web browser's cache and cookies. Also, ensure that your Windows Defender or third-party antivirus is not blocking MEGA.

MEGA on Android

Fix: Clear the MEGA app cache in your Android settings, or update the app to the latest version from the Google Play Store. Re-establishing your Wi-Fi or mobile data connection can also help.
Check: Open the MEGA app to see if it displays connection errors, or try accessing your account via a mobile web browser. You can also check if other apps load normally to rule out local network issues.

MEGA on iPhone and iPad

Fix: Force close and reopen the MEGA app, or reinstall it from the App Store if it continues to crash. Ensure that cellular data access is enabled for MEGA in your iOS settings.
Check: Try logging into the MEGA website using Safari to see if the service is online. You can also check if the MEGA app displays a synchronization or connection error.

What happens when MEGA goes down

MEGA is an encrypted cloud storage service, launched in 2013, with apps for desktop sync, iOS and Android as well as the browser version. Freelancers and small teams use it to store and share large files, so when it fails you lose access to your Cloud Drive and to the download links you already sent to clients.

Login usually breaks first. The web app hangs on the loading screen or sends you back to the sign-in page, while the desktop app shows transfers stuck or paused and stops syncing changes in either direction. Shared links may refuse to open for the people you sent them to, and chat messages can sit unsent. Problems are often partial and can hit some regions harder than others, so the mobile app might still list your folders while previews and uploads fail; a transfer quota notice on a big download means you hit a bandwidth limit, which is a separate issue from an outage.

Is MEGA down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. If reports look normal, the fault is probably closer to you. Open the site in a private browser window or try the mobile app on cellular data instead of Wi-Fi; if it works there, clear your browser cache and turn off any VPN or ad blocker, because either one can stop pages and transfers from loading.

Why does MEGA stop my download and say the transfer quota is exceeded?

Free accounts can only download so much in a set period, and once you reach that limit the service pauses the transfer and shows how long you need to wait. Your files are fine. You can wait for the timer to run out and retry, or sign in to a paid account with a larger allowance.

Why does a MEGA link ask me for a decryption key?

Shared links carry the key after the # sign, so when part of the link gets cut off during copying, the page asks you to enter the key before it can open the file. Ask the sender for the full link, or for the key on its own if they shared it separately. A message saying the file is no longer available is a different problem; it usually means the owner deleted it or the link was taken down.

Why is the MEGA desktop app stuck on syncing?

Open the app's transfer list first, since a paused sync or a full storage quota will stop uploads without much warning. If storage is full, empty the Rubbish Bin, because deleted files still count against your space until you clear them. Quitting and reopening the app fixes most other stalls.

Can I get back into my MEGA account if I forget my password?

Only if you have your Recovery Key or are still logged in on another device, because your files are encrypted with a key tied to your password and the service cannot reset it for you. A logged-in session lets you change the password from settings without losing anything. Without either, a reset gets you back into the account but your old files stay unreadable, so keep the Recovery Key somewhere offline. The help centre at https://mega.nz/help covers the steps.
