Troubleshooting

How to fix Google Messages not working

Google Messages is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach android.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force stop Google Messages

Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google Messages > Force stop, then launch it from your home screen or app drawer. That clears a stuck process.

  2. Send a test SMS in Google Messages

Turn off Wi-Fi, then send a short SMS to a contact you know. If that works, your Wi-Fi or VPN is the likely block, so check those settings next.

  3. Clear the Google Messages cache

Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google Messages > Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache; that removes temporary files and leaves your message history alone. Open the app and try again.

  4. Reset RCS chats in Google Messages

Open the app, tap your profile picture, then Messages settings > RCS chats, and turn RCS chats off and back on. Give it a minute to reconnect before you send another message.

While Google Messages is down: what to use instead

  • Phone call Call the person directly when a message needs an answer fast; a voice call avoids the chat app entirely.
  • WhatsApp Send the message through WhatsApp if the other person has it installed and you both can use data or Wi-Fi.
  • Signal Use Signal for one-to-one chats or group messages when both sides have the app and want another data-based option.
  • Email Email the person for longer updates that can wait; it keeps the thread open while the app is unavailable.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Google Messages

Since 27 October, Google Messages's only spike in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Google Messages goes down

Google Messages is the default messaging app on many Android phones, and many people use it as their main inbox for SMS, RCS chats, group threads, and photo sharing. When it fails, you lose the thread with family and work, and you can miss bank or login codes.

You tap send and nothing leaves the queue, or the bubble sits with 'Sending' before it shows 'Not sent'; group threads can stall while a one-to-one SMS still goes through. Old threads still open. RCS chat features tend to fail before plain SMS does; read receipts and typing indicators stop updating, and the web client can lose its pairing to your phone. Problems are often partial: one carrier or region fails while other numbers keep working, and photo uploads can hang even when short texts go through.

Questions

Google Messages FAQ

Is Google Messages down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Google Messages are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not ping or monitor the service. To see if the problem is only on your side, send an SMS or RCS message from another phone to yours, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, check the web app after pairing your phone, and try another contact; if other people get through and only your device fails, the issue is local.

Why do my RCS chats keep switching back to SMS?

RCS needs mobile data or Wi-Fi and chat features enabled for both people, so a weak connection or a carrier mismatch can drop a chat back to SMS. Check the Chat features status in the app settings and test a message to another contact; if it still flips, restart the phone and ask your carrier about RCS support.

Why won't Google Messages for web pair with my phone?

Pairing fails when the phone is offline, the app is closed, the QR code has expired, or the browser session is stale, because the browser relies on the phone to send and receive messages. Open the app on the phone, confirm mobile data or Wi-Fi works, close the browser tab, and scan a fresh code; if it still fails, sign out of the web session and start over.

Why do I get 'Message not sent' when I send a photo?

A photo goes as MMS when RCS is unavailable, and that needs a working mobile data connection plus the right carrier settings. Try sending a smaller photo, switch mobile data on, check the APN settings, and test a plain text message; if plain texts send but pictures fail, the carrier settings are the likely cause.

Why are my Google Messages notifications late or missing?

Battery saver and background data limits can hold notifications until you open the app, and a stuck RCS connection can do the same. Check notification permissions for the app, remove battery restrictions for it, reopen the app, and look at the Chat features status; if it says Connecting or Not connected, that explains the delay.

How we track Google Messages

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Google Messages, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Google Messages, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Google Messages doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
