Open Join ARK and untick every filter, including map, session type and password protected, then refresh the list; one stale filter hides the server you want. A friend's non-dedicated session only exists while they are inside the world, so ask them to load in first.
Drop mismatched Workshop mods
Mods break joins more often than people expect. A missing or outdated mod on your end kicks you back to the main menu with a mismatch message before the map loads, so unsubscribe from the server's Workshop mods and let Steam finish removing them. Resubscribe one at a time to find the bad one.
Verify the game files in Steam
Right-click ARK in your Steam library, open Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces corrupted downloads, which clears crash-on-launch and stuck loading screens that come from a bad map file. Leave it running. It takes a while on a large install.
Rebuild your local config files
Close the game and rename ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor inside your install folder, then launch again so the game builds a fresh copy. Bad entries in GameUserSettings.ini cause freezes and odd keybinds. Keep a backup if you want your server favourites.
