How to fix Google Slides not working

Google Slides is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach google.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reload the Slides tab

    Press Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on a Mac. If the deck still hangs, open a private window in Chrome with Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on a Mac, then sign in again; that rules out a bad cookie or cached script in your normal profile.

  2. Try another presentation

    Open a different file from the Slides home screen. If only one deck fails, the likely cause is that file or its sharing settings; use the Share button to check if your account has edit access. A file you cannot edit greys out the editing tools, and a file with no access shows a request access screen.

  3. Disable extensions for Slides

    In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions, then Manage Extensions, and switch off every extension with its toggle. Reload the presentation; if it opens, switch extensions on one at a time until the broken one shows itself. Other browsers have a similar extensions page, but the menu names differ.

  4. Clear Slides site data

    In Chrome, click the icon left of the address bar, choose Cookies and site data, then Manage cookies and site data and delete the entries for this site. Sign back into your Google account and reopen the presentation. This clears stale login tokens and cached files that can leave the editor on a blank screen.

What happens when Google Slides goes down

Google Slides is the browser based deck editor in Google Workspace that you share with classmates or coworkers to build and present slides together in real time. Outages freeze that collaboration.

You notice it first when your deck spins on the loading screen or your edits stop saving although Drive still opens. Comments freeze as well. Because Slides shares login and storage with Docs and Drive, a broad outage can block present mode and image uploads while a small glitch breaks just sharing links. If your file still fails after refresh, check revision history once it returns because recent changes often vanish.

Is Google Slides down right now?

Why does Slides hang on 'Trying to connect' instead of saving?
You see that retry bar when Drive cannot reach the file to autosave. If your Wi-Fi drops for a moment or an ad blocker breaks the socket, leave the tab open while you check connection and pause offline sync in Drive settings. Copy saves your work.

I shared the link but collaborators still hit 'You need access', what am I missing?
That prompt means Link sharing missed them. Open Share and check if you sent Viewer rights to the right address, since school and work accounts often block outside sharing by default. Ask them to retry.

How do I get embedded YouTube video and audio to play in Present mode?
If the video shows black in Present but plays in edit, your browser blocked third-party playback or you lost net for a second. Reinsert it through Insert then Video after you allow third-party cookies. Test Present mode again.

My deck looks fine on laptop but fonts and spacing break on phone, how do I fix it?
Missing fonts cause most phone shifts. Stick to Slides fonts like Arial and Calibri for titles and body, then check overflow on a small screen before you share the link with viewers. Keep desktop as master.
