Troubleshooting

How to fix BC Hydro not working

BC Hydro is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach bchydro.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Refresh the BC Hydro page or app

The report level at the top reflects other people's problem reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not check your own connection. Pull down on the app screen to refresh, or press Ctrl+R on a desktop browser and Command+R on a Mac; if the sign-in page stalls, close the tab and open the site again.

  2. Open the BC Hydro account in a private window

Old cookies can break the sign-in page. Open a private window so cached sign-in data stays out of the test: in Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on a Mac; in Safari, choose File > New Private Window. Sign in again and see if the account page loads.

  3. Switch networks before retrying BC Hydro

Turn off Wi-Fi in Settings and load the account page over cellular data, or move from cellular to a known Wi-Fi network. That rules out one bad connection. Restart the phone afterward: on iPhone use Settings > General > Shut Down, and on Android hold the power button and choose Restart.

  4. Reinstall the BC Hydro app

Remove the app, then install it again from the App Store or Google Play. Open it and sign in once; if the same screen fails, use the mobile site in your browser instead.

While BC Hydro is down: what to use instead

  • MyHydro website The account site loads in a browser when the app will not, and you can check bills and account details there.
  • Outage phone line Call the utility's outage line when you need to report a cut or hear restoration updates, because the app may not load during a wider failure.
  • Bank bill payment Your bank's bill payment screen works when the app's payment step stalls; have the account number from your bill ready.
  • Local news radio Local news radio carries outage updates during a wide event, which helps when the app and website are both slow.

About

What happens when BC Hydro goes down

BC Hydro supplies electricity across much of British Columbia, and homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools depend on its grid to keep lights, heating, cooling, and equipment running. A power outage cuts lights and outlets and can stop electric heating or cooling, leaving a home dark and cold or hot.

During an outage, lights and outlets go dead first, and electric heating or cooling stops while a fridge warms. Your router dies too. A payment terminal loses power unless it sits on backup, and elevators may stop between floors. Outages tend to be regional or partial: one neighborhood or feeder line can go dark while nearby blocks keep power, and a storm can widen the damage; a rise in reports here comes from people hitting trouble, and the app never pings or monitors the utility itself.

Questions

BC Hydro FAQ

Is BC Hydro down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level; it counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not ping or probe the service. Check your side with another device and a different network, then sign in again if only the account page fails; if other sites load while the outage map or account page does not, the problem is on your connection or browser session.

Why does the outage map show power at my address when my block is dark?

The outage map draws from reported outages, so your address can sit outside a boundary even when the power is off at your meter. Zoom in to street level. If your block is dark, report the outage from your service address so the map can catch up.

Why can't I sign in to MyHydro?

Start with a password reset. Use a browser that is not holding an old session; the app and the website share the same account, so a stale sign-in can follow you between them. If the reset email does not arrive, check spam and try the address you use for paperless billing.

Why does the MyHydro app show a different balance than my bank payment?

A payment can sit in transit between your bank and the account, so the balance in the app may not match the moment you hit send. Check the payment date and the account number on your bank confirmation. If the payment was scheduled for a later day, the app will show the older balance until it posts, so keep the confirmation until the balance catches up.

How do I report an outage if the MyHydro app will not load?

Use the report an outage section on the website. Enter the service address that matches your meter; the app and site share the same account, so the website route works when the app is stuck. Take a screenshot of any error message, then try again on cellular data if the page stalls.

How we track BC Hydro

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for BC Hydro, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for BC Hydro, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. BC Hydro doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
