Tor Project outages and problems
In the past 24 hours, 49 user reports came in for Tor Project. Counting only the 15-minute windows with a spike big enough to count as an outage, that comes to 100.00% uptime for the day.
The busiest 15-minute window had 3 reports, about 22 hours ago. That stays below our outage threshold, so it doesn't count as downtime.

How to fix Tor Project not working
Tor Project is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:
Your browser tries to reach torproject.org over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
Sync the system clock
A wrong system clock can stop Tor Browser at 'Connecting to a relay'. On Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically; on macOS, open System Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set time and date automatically and Set time zone automatically. Restart Tor Browser after the clock syncs.
Try a built-in bridge
When the plain connection fails, open Configure Connection in Tor Browser and choose Use a bridge. Pick obfs4 or snowflake from the built-in menu and click Connect; the browser will retry through that bridge.
Allow Tor Browser through the firewall
A local firewall or antivirus can block Tor Browser even when your internet works. On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall, click Change settings, and allow Tor Browser for Private and Public networks. If your antivirus has its own firewall, allow the app there too and restart the computer.
Reinstall Tor Browser cleanly
A damaged profile or program folder can keep failing after the other fixes. Get a fresh installer from the Tor Project website and install it into a new empty folder; leave the old copy in place until the new one builds a circuit. Copy bookmarks from the old profile only after the clean copy connects.
While Tor Project is down: what to use instead
- Installed Tor Browser Open the copy you already installed; it starts without a download.
- Built-in bridges Choose a bridge from Tor Browser's connection settings when the normal route fails and you still need to reach the network.
- Orbot Use Orbot on Android when other apps need Tor routing.
- Tails Boot Tails from a USB stick if you need a separate system that sends traffic through Tor and the project pages will not load.
What happens when Tor Project goes down
Tor Project develops the Tor anonymity network and the browser many people use to reach it. An outage interrupts onion services and ordinary browsing for journalists, people in censored regions, privacy researchers, and anyone who needs a safer connection.
The status at the top of the page reflects user problem reports above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the app does not ping or monitor the network itself. During an outage, Tor Browser can stall at the relay or consensus step, and you may get a failed connection message instead of a page. Onion services break next. The trouble is often partial or regional, because a local network filter or a country-level block can cut your route while other people reach the network without trouble.

How we track Tor Project
The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Tor Project, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Tor Project, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.
When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Tor Project doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
