Microsoft OneDrive errors and common problems
Common problems people run into with Microsoft OneDrive and its error codes, with how to fix each one, taken from Microsoft OneDrive's own help pages and put in plain words. If many people have trouble at once, the cause may be on Microsoft OneDrive's side: check whether Microsoft OneDrive is down right now.
Common problems
-
Files not syncing: Often stuck on Processing changes
- Means
- OneDrive stops uploading or shows Processing changes for a long time. Microsoft says an open file, a very large file, a big batch of new files, a recent sign-in or update, or being signed out can all hold sync up.
- First step
- Close any OneDrive file you still have open. All steps
-
Can't sign in: Signed out or blocked by the network
- Means
- The OneDrive app shows a gray cloud with a line through it or says it is not connected. Microsoft says this means you are signed out, or that a firewall on your network is blocking OneDrive.
- First step
- Click the gray OneDrive icon and enter your email address and password on the Set up OneDrive screen. All steps
-
OneDrive storage full: Storage quota used up or reduced
- Means
- OneDrive stops uploading, editing and syncing new files, and the files you already have become read-only. Microsoft says this happens when you or people on your plan go over the quota, a shared folder pushes you over it, or a subscription or promotion ends and your quota drops.
- First step
- Open Manage your OneDrive storage to see what takes up space, and empty the Recycle bin. All steps
Error codes
-
Sync pending: A hidden or temporary file blocks sync
- Means
- A folder or file shows Sync pending and never finishes. Microsoft says a hidden file or a temporary .tmp file in the folder is often what holds it up.
- First step
- Turn on Hidden items in File Explorer to find hidden files in the folder. All steps
-
0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running
- Means
- Windows shows this error when you try to open, copy or move OneDrive files and the OneDrive app is not working properly in the background. Microsoft's fix is to update Windows, turn off Files On-Demand and reset OneDrive.
- First step
- Check for and install Windows updates. All steps
