How to fix Mastodon not working

Mastodon is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach mastodon.social over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Reload the tab or restart the app
Close the tab, or swipe the app away and reopen it, then sign in again if the session looks broken. A blank timeline or a feed stuck on a spinner often clears with a fresh load. If the login screen rejects your password or your two-factor code, set your authenticator app's clock to automatic, since a code a few seconds out of step will fail.
Open the web version in a browser
Type your instance's address into a browser and log in there. If the site loads, the fault sits in the app on your phone; if the browser fails too, the server is the likely cause. Each instance is one server among many, so trouble on yours does not mean Mastodon as a whole is down.
Check filters, mutes and blocks
Go to Preferences, then Filters, and look for a keyword filter that matches posts you expect to see. Mutes and blocks sit in the same settings menu and hide accounts just as quietly. A filter you set and forgot about will keep posts out of your home feed and your notifications.
Reinstall the app, then check your instance
Delete the app, install the current version from the App Store or Google Play, and log back in; this clears local data that goes bad and makes media stall or the timeline freeze. If the browser version fails as well, read the about page of your instance for an admin announcement, and check the official status page at https://status.mastodon.social if you are on the flagship server.

What happens when Mastodon goes down

Mastodon is a decentralized social network where independent servers connect into one shared conversation, and its communities, journalists, moderators, and server admins rely on timelines and direct posts to stay in touch. An outage cuts those threads: timelines stop refreshing, cross-server follows break, and posts hang without sending.

The first sign is usually a home timeline that will not load new posts while older ones remain visible. Notifications and direct messages then lag or fail outright. Posting can return an error or spin without confirmation, media uploads can stall, follow requests across servers tend to fail, and some mobile clients show a blank screen or a login loop. Problems are often partial, since one instance can struggle while others work; the status at the top of each page counts user reports above their usual level, and this site does not ping or monitor servers, so a quiet page does not prove every server is healthy.

Is Mastodon down right now?

Why does the app show "Something went wrong" when the website works?

A working website points to the app or your session, so sign out and back in, then clear the app cache or reinstall it. The official app and third-party clients such as Tusky hold their own login tokens, and a token can go stale after a password change or server move. If the error follows you to the web client, the instance itself is likely having trouble.

Why do some profiles show as unavailable or "Not Found" on Mastodon?

Profiles can vanish from your view when the account is deleted, suspended, moved, or its home server is offline; a server block also hides posts and profile pages. Try opening the profile in a logged-out browser to see whether the account still exists elsewhere. If it loads there but not in your app, your instance is the one filtering or failing to fetch it.

Why does adding a photo make my post fail?

Large files hit the instance upload limit, and a slow connection can make the progress bar stall before the server rejects the post. Check the file size and format first, then try a smaller image or a shorter clip on the same network. If small files fail too, the media processing queue on your server may be backed up.

What happens to my posts and followers if my Mastodon server goes offline for good?

Your posts and followers are tied to the server where you signed up, so a permanent shutdown removes your access unless you exported an archive first. Mastodon has an account move option, and its exact effect on followers depends on the server software and version, so read the migration prompt before you confirm. If the server is only temporarily offline, wait for it to return and avoid creating a new account with the same address.
