Instagram errors and common problems
Common problems people run into with Instagram and its error codes, with how to fix each one, taken from Instagram's own help pages and put in plain words. If many people have trouble at once, the cause may be on Instagram's side: check whether Instagram is down right now.
Common problems
-
Can't log in: Password or login link not working
- Means
- Instagram will not accept your login or keeps sending you back to the login screen. Instagram's fix is to reset the password with a login link sent to your email or phone.
- First step
- Tap Forgot password? on the login screen. All steps
-
Feed won't load: Posts, stories or messages stay blank
- Means
- The feed, stories or messages will not load or refresh. Instagram's general steps check for a weak Wi-Fi or mobile data connection and an outdated app.
- First step
- Update Instagram and your phone's operating system to the latest version. All steps
-
Account hacked: Someone else changed your login details
- Means
- Someone got into the account and may have changed the email, phone number or password. Instagram offers a login link, a security code request and an identity check to get it back.
- First step
- Look for an email from [email protected] about a changed email address and tap secure my account in it. All steps
-
App keeps crashing: Usually an old or unsupported app version
- Means
- The app closes right after it opens or stops working. Instagram says this is often because the installed version is too old and no longer supported.
- First step
- Update Instagram to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. All steps
-
Account disabled: Instagram shut the account for a rule break
- Means
- You see a message at login saying the account was disabled. Instagram disables accounts that do not follow its Community Standards, and you can ask for a review if you think it was a mistake.
- First step
- Log in to Instagram and read the disabled message. All steps

Try again later: Instagram flagged activity on your account
- Means
- Instagram blocks some actions, such as following or liking, and shows this message. It says this can happen when it detects inauthentic activity on the account, which can also mean someone else knows your password.
- First step
- Change your password or send yourself a password reset email. All steps
