How to fix Valheim not working

Valheim is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Restart Valheim and Steam
Quit the game to desktop, exit Steam from the top-left menu, then open Steam again and launch the game. Try the same world or server. Stuck Steam hooks can block a join or leave you on a black screen; a full restart clears them without touching your saves.
Verify Valheim game files
Open Steam and find the game in your Library. Right-click it, pick Properties, then open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam will replace missing or damaged files before you launch again.
Test a new Valheim world
From the main menu, choose Start Game and make a new character and world. If the new world loads, your old save is the likely problem, so restore a .old backup or ask the host for a fresh copy. A crash before the menu points to files or mods instead.
Allow Valheim through Windows Firewall
Open Windows Security, go to Firewall & network protection, and click Allow an app through firewall. Choose Change settings, then Allow another app, browse to valheim.exe, and tick both Private and Public. If disconnects continue, reinstall the game from Steam.

What happens when Valheim goes down

Valheim is a Viking survival and crafting game for PC and console, and co-op groups plus dedicated server hosts rely on its multiplayer layer to keep a shared world running. An outage interrupts joining a world and keeping a session alive, which can show up as a failed connection or a friend stuck at the loading screen.

Multiplayer breaks first. You may get stuck on 'Connecting...' or see a failed connection when you try to join a friend's world, and dedicated servers can still appear in the list while refusing every join attempt. Crossplay between PC and console often drops or fails to appear, while Steam or Xbox login trouble can keep you out of the main menu. Is Valheim down right now?

A spike means other players are hitting the same wall, though a flat line does not prove everything works, so rule out your side first: load another online game, check that your Steam or Xbox friends list comes up, restart the router, and try a cable instead of Wi-Fi.

Why does connecting to a dedicated server fail for me but work for everyone else?

Your machine and the host usually sit behind the same router, and some routers block the loopback from the local network to the public address, so the join fails while remote players get through. Connect with the host's local address instead. If that does not work, move the server to a different machine, and ask the host to confirm the game and query ports are open on their router.

Does crossplay between Steam and Xbox need Valheim's servers to work?

Crossplay goes through a relay service that sits outside the normal game servers, so it can fail while everything else works. A version mismatch can block the join as well. Check that you and your friend are on the same update, then toggle crossplay off and on again in the world settings; if that changes nothing, try a direct connection with crossplay switched off and see whether the join goes through.

Why did my world roll back to an older save after a crash?

The game writes world backups on a timer and keeps the last few, so a crash during a save can drop you into an older copy. Check your world folder for those backup files and rename the newest one to match the main save. On a dedicated server, stop the server before you swap anything, or it will overwrite your change on the next save.

Why does the game crash on launch after an update when I use mods?

Most mods hook into the game through a loader, and a patch moves the code they attach to, so an outdated mod crashes your launch rather than the game breaking for everyone. Turn mods off and start once. If it loads clean, re-enable them a few at a time until it breaks, then check that one mod's page for an update.
