Google Gemini errors and common problems
Common problems people run into with Google Gemini and its error codes, with how to fix each one, taken from Google Gemini's own help pages and put in plain words. If many people have trouble at once, the cause may be on Google Gemini's side: check whether Google Gemini is down right now.
Common problems
-
Can't sign in: Account type, age or location blocks access
- Means
- Gemini shows Something went wrong or Can't access this service when you try to sign in. Google says the account may not be eligible right now because of its type, the user's age, the location or its activity history.
- First step
- Use a personal Google Account you manage yourself, or a work or school account where the admin has turned Gemini on. All steps
-
Usage limit reached: You used up your 5-hour or weekly allowance
- Means
- Gemini stops answering with the model you picked and tells you when your limit resets. Limits depend on your plan, the model, the features you use and how long the chat is, and they reset every 5 hours up to a weekly cap.
- First step
- Check the notice or open Settings, then Usage Limits, to see when your limit refreshes. All steps
-
Can't generate images: Image requests refused or failing
- Means
- Gemini replies that it can't generate images, even for requests it normally handles. Google's advice is to start over in a new chat, and it notes that some features are not available to every account.
- First step
- Open a New chat and enter your prompt again. All steps
Error codes
-
Something went wrong. Please try again later.: Gemini failed while answering your prompt
- Means
- Gemini ran into an unexpected problem with your prompt. The same message often carries a number such as (13) or 1185, and Google groups those codes under the same steps.
- First step
- Send the prompt again. All steps
-
Gemini is currently not supported in your location: Gemini is not offered in your region
- Means
- Gemini Apps are not available in the country or region Google detects for you yet. The same block can show up as error code 1060.
- First step
- Check Google's list of countries where the Gemini web app is available. All steps
