Google errors and common problems
Common problems people run into with Google and its error codes, with how to fix each one, taken from Google's own help pages and put in plain words. If many people have trouble at once, the cause may be on Google's side: check whether Google is down right now.
Common problems
-
Verification code not arriving: 2-Step Verification text or call fails
- Means
- The 2-Step Verification code Google should text or call you with never shows up. Google says it may have sent a Google prompt to your phone instead, and that an unusual sign-in location, your phone plan or a weak connection can stop text codes.
- First step
- Check your phone for a Google prompt, since Google may send one instead of a code. All steps
-
Browser blocks sign-in: Unsupported browser, extensions or JavaScript off
- Means
- Google refuses to sign you in from your browser. Google says it may block browsers that have JavaScript turned off, use unsafe extensions, are run by automation software, or are built into another app.
- First step
- Use a supported browser such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera or Edge. All steps
Error codes

Google couldn't verify this account belongs to you: Account recovery could not confirm it's you
- Means
- Google shows this at the end of account recovery when it can't confirm that you own the account. Google says you can try again, and that using a familiar device, browser and place gives you a better chance.
- First step
- Start account recovery again and answer every question, making your best guess if you are unsure. All steps
-
Our systems have detected unusual traffic: Google sees automated searches from your network
- Means
- Google Search shows this page, usually with a reCAPTCHA, instead of results. Google says it appears when your network, a VPN, others on a shared connection, or malware on a device send automated searches.
- First step
- Solve the reCAPTCHA, and turn on JavaScript if no reCAPTCHA appears. All steps
