Common problemGitHubGit command line

GitHub rejects a push with a large file

Files over 100 MiB are blocked

The push fails because a commit holds a file that is too big. GitHub blocks files larger than 100 MiB and warns about files over 50 MiB.

Is GitHub down right now? Major outage: 787 problem reports in the last hour. Many people are having trouble, so this problem may come from GitHub's side: waiting can be enough.
Fix it

How to fix it

  1. Remove the big file from the commit with git rm --cached and amend the commit.

  2. If the file is in older commits, remove it from the history before you push again.

  3. Track large files with Git Large File Storage (Git LFS) instead.

  4. Share big binaries through a GitHub release rather than the repository.
